Ancient Sword Value

    Hey all,

Just have a quick question which hopefully someone here will have some info on.
I know someone who is looking to sell a sword, it was handed down through a few generations and spent a few years in a museum.

The people of the museum informed him it was an approximately 2.5 thousand year old viking sword and looks similar to what can be seen here: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/claremuseum/riches_of_clare/power/bronze_leaf_shaped_sword.htm

It's was found in lake and has a kind of black staining all over and some grey staining on one side which kind of looks like sediment from the lake.

Also it's a bronze sword. It doesn't have the same holes as the one in the picture, instead it has a longer handle with two holes in it.

So i guess the question is; would anyone have any idea as to how to value and sell it?

Any info or advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Dunno if you can sell such an item, legally, without paperwork.

Thanks, i'll see if he got any paperwork from the museum. Is there a legal obligation to give an artifact up to a museum?

There is, if it is of significant historical importance. eg early Christian items you have to 'fess up to the National Museum, a Viking sword may be borderline.
