Normally they get the racing from Ch 4. I do not know where they get their coverage from today but there is a bookie shop in Donneybrook. Perhaps .....

If it's the Channel 4 feed they were using, that would have been originally in HD. Having only one HD channel could they not prioritise their schedules so that if a particular feed is in HD they could broadcast that on their HD channel. Another example is Eurovision which again is available in HD but RTÉ choose to downscale it for RTÉ One, Mrs. Brown's Boys is another example. It's just an example of poor schedule management. Pity they can't/won't use the full potential of their HD output by taking every opportunity to show HD whenever they can. Perhaps all this might change when/if RTÉ One goes HD.

It's only taken the BBC seven years* to get their two primary channels in HD, hopefully RTE1HD will be along sooner than that...

*since launch of BBC HD - or ten years since launch of Freeview - or 15 years since the launch of DTT...

I suppose the point is that a bit of joined-up thinking need not cost much.

People can really appreciate sporting events in HD, whereas the kids watching Roly Mo neither know nor care. A little bit of rearranging would go a long way to getting the maximum benefit from HD resources.

    (I don't even like horse racing :))

Yesterday, they were re-broadcasting the Racing UK coverage.

RTE 2 the whole point of HD on that channel first was due to it carrying the sport.

    Yes, my point exactly.

That's what I was told too. It also annoys me that some recent fairly decent movie "network premiers" were on lowest rate possible RTÉ1. Maybe they're getting advice from UK Ch5

Is there any reason they cannot switcg RTE 1 to HD and switch RTE 2 to SD?

I would have thought this would be easy and could be done at the encoding point when they assemble the multiplex. In other swap the channel IDs at transmission.

I think some part-time HD channels in the UK tried changing resolutions on the fly and a lot of receivers didn't like it.
They're unlikely to accept a change in the channel line-up either without a retune.
We're back again to the second mux and who's going to pick up the bill to turn it on.

They could change the horizontal resolution to 720 from 544 without any effect on the receivers, I would think. I think the input feed is very low resolution - not even up to the usual standard of RTE 1. It is particularly fuzzy.

My theory why RTÉ used the Racing UK pictures is because RTÉ Racing (from the likes of Leopardstown, Galway etc.) is produced by Highflyer productions who also produce Racing UK AFAIK. Up to 1 January this year Highflyer produced Channel 4 racing as well and used always provide these pictures to RTÉ. Since 1 January this year Channel 4 Racing has been produced by IMG Media and basically given a whole new look and new personnel, a lot picked up from the BBC who do not broadcast racing any more. As a result I would expect if the Grand National is broadcast by RTÉ in a few weeks it will be the RUK feed which is the same as used by TurfTV in betting shops.

Also the Channel 4 picture was not in Native HD, it was up scaled on Channel 4HD.
