Sicily - Transfers from Catania to Taormina

    Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone who has been to Sicily before could advise me on the best way to get from Catania airport to the town of Taormina. The two of us are heading there for the last week in April. When booking it was looking like transfers would run us nearly €150 each, so we said forget that. I've seen some suggestions that you can get the bus (similar to an aircoach I'd presume) from €10. I'm just wondering if anyone has done so before? Any links to the bus website don't have a timetable on them. Our flight arrives at 19.20 on a Wednesday, so it's not that irregular a time. I'd rather not have to rent a car.

First hit on google for catania airport has transfer information which brought me here

    http://www.etnatrasporti.it/Orarietariffe.aspx

Last bus seems stupidly to leave at 1945 so you'll have to hope you're on time and the queues for baggage/passport control had better be short. You might be as well only having hand luggage. Maybe the bus will wait for the plane. Price is €8.10 each return.

Asking on tripadvisor forum for Sicily might get you more experienced and up to date information.

Thanks for that. I think I saw that page before but the timetable wasn't there. Hmmm we get in at 19.20, and will have a checked baggage, it looks like we'll have to run for it and see how we get on. At least it's an option for the return leg.

Went on a charter flight to Catania once with a few mates, we were heading for Taormina but not on a package so once we landed in Catania we were on our own. The courier obviously bribed the local customs officials because all of the luggage on the plane magically got transferred from the plane straight on to a trolley which then appeared in the coach car park beside the bus hired by the tour operator - nobody had to pull their bags from the carousel and walk the bags through customs.

We walked to the bus and reclaimed our bags no problem. We then asked the courier (a UK lady) if we could go to Taormina on the bus and she stiffed us for £20 each one-way. When we came back to the airport a week later we discovered outside the airport on the wall was a bus timetable telling that there was a reasonably frequent service to Taormina for about £2, then we understood why the courier made sure to get our bags out of the airport building as quickly as possible, it was to prevent us from checking out the transport options. Couriers are up to every scam in the book.

Taormina is a very popular package holiday destination, if you arrive too late for the local bus service then you can always negotiate to pay a tour company bus to take you there (you need to talk to the courier, not the driver) but I'd check out the local bus options first.
