First point you don't need an icon to run a programme.

It may have messed up her desktop but I doubt it has deleted or uninstalled all her programmes.

Has it changed the target on the desktop links or just the icon.

If the former she just needs to delete the icon and create a new one to link to whatever programme she wants.

If the latter then just change the icon back.

correct grammar, sentence structure and basic essay writing skills go a long way to help people understand what you are trying to communicate.

Not to be a nazi, but it's hard to make out what your problem is. From what I can derive, you are having a problem where the default player settings have been switched inadvertently. This can happen if a user hastily clicks through a prompt by some scrupulous programs to make themselves the default for certain file types.

In Windows there is a menu whereby you can change the Default Programs which any particular file type will open to (eg. you can set .jpegs to open up in Photo Gallery, .wma's to open in iTunes, etc). This should be somewhere in Control Panel in Windows XP, but it has been years since I have stepped foot in that Operating System. To access this from Vista or Windows 7, go to the start menu and begin typing Default Programs this should pull up a link to the menu. In Windows 8. From the Start Screen type Default Programs, and it should also just pull right up. From this menu you can find the file type you want to change settings for (eg. .mp4) and set which program it runs in by default (eg. iTunes or VLC)
