Maybe it doesn't have a 64 bit version.

64-bit is handy for programs that require a lot of memory, especially photo and video editing

For a music player, it's really not necessary.

Funny, last week I had to install iTunes on a Windows 7 64-bit PC, the 32-bit iTunes installer wouldn't run, said "pls download the 64-bit version".

I too downloaded the 64 bit version, but task manager says it is running 32 bit... fair enough comment about it not needing it... Just thought the program downloaded in 64 would be a 64 no matter what.

iTunes is a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit components
The 64-bit version of iTunes you downloaded contains 64-bit drivers for Windows 7, however the application itself is still a 32-bit application. You should see your iTunes installed in (default) C:\Program Files (x86)\ and the iPod helper files installed in C:\Program Files.

There's two reasons for the 64-bit iTunes. The application itself is still 32-bit but it contains 64-bit drivers for the iOS devices. Also, it contains a 64-bit shell extension for the taskbar mini player. As 64-bit applications (explorer.exe in this case) can't link to a 32-bit DLL they had to port the mini player to 64-bit.
