Patio & Retaining Wall

    Hi,

I want to install a paving flag patio, and build a 60cm retaining wall at the end of the patio. I plan on laying two inches of hardcore and two inches of sand on compacted soil for the patio.

On the installation guide for the retaining wall, it says that I should include 1 full course plus H/20 below the grade.

My question is: do I classify the surface level of the patio as the grade, or do I classify the surface level of the patio underneath as the grade. Obviously if it is the latter then I need more bricks.

    Thanks in advance, Soddy!

    Depends.....
Is the 60cm wall retaining 60cm of existing ground

Or are you building a wall and filling in behind it.
If the latter, then build wall first and pave upto it. If you want a wall 60 cm above finished level of paving then you need to work out your level of foundation to be appox same as finished level of paving. Or easier way is dig foundation into soil and lay two courses of blocks(8.5"cavities) and on top one course of 4" solid on its side. Then pave upto wall and hey presto a wall appox 60cm above finished level.
    Hope this makes sense.
