I Was watching the documentry last night recounting the memories, loss, bravery and dedication shown by the emergency services especially the firefighters who lost 300+ personel on 9/11..... 1/8 of the total life lost on the day. I dont know the count for Paramedics and police....

The appreciation shown by all especially the public , the Media and the recognition given by the government around that time overwhelmed the services themselves....the word 'hero' never sat right with those that were 'just doing their job'.... a job that they had done daily before that infamous date....

Its hard not to see the 'difference' here in this country. We have no defining moment (thankfully) like or comparable to the chaos or devestation of 9/11, but as far as i'm concerned there are countless acts of selflessness, compassion, dedication and bravery not always visible to the media, public representives or at times even the concerned deserving public that we deal with every hour every day accross this country.........but they are known by our immediate management.

Collectively going the extra mile, giving that little extra time or attention I always thought meant something or was recognised at some level by our employer.......but it looks like we are in the wrong country for that.
I think that it's this lack of recognition that is at the root of the feelings of anger, disillusionment and almost rejection being felt by the frontline services at this moment..... & dont get me wrong i'm not one for or talking about gestures of medals, stars or stripes..

The difference and reality is that in most countries their emergency services be they police, paramedics or fire are looked up to, appreciated and admired, there is a comradre, not only between the personel but also between the boots on the ground and the suits on the top.......Sadly in Ireland we are seen and more so treated as the 'Mop and Bucket' of the public service...........

What are you trying to say if it's not "gestures of medals, stars or stripes.." your looking for is it more money? of course people appreciate what a difficult & dangerous job is done by emergency services & it must be a rewarding job to do also helping to save lives?

No megafan, we are on the same planet.... I haven't looked for a payrise in almost a decade when at the same time there was a fortune to be made in different sectors across the economy,
but I have had several cuts in that past few years, pay and pension related ,my employment contract was written with pencil it seems rather than ink........unlike some.

What i'm refering to here is the lack of understanding or the refusal to recognise and understand that what we do is not and can not be compared to most other jobs or working enviornments.....I'm also refering to the lack of support from our employer (gov) and our immediate management...

Yes i get paid, and yes i am fortunate to have a job .....but im not going to let anyone use that as a stick to beat me with....

Incase u'r not uptodate the frontline public services operating 24/7 are being asked to take a 4-5% paycut above the average for the privilage of working unsociable hours....nights, weekends ect.

By the time minister shatter is finished 90 years of goodwill will be destroyed.......and all for a few million quid.

In years to come people will say it was one of the biggest mistakes ever made, and all because of the arrogance of one man.

crackcrack30 we have a problem in this country created by previous administrations running effectively a pyramid scam on borrowed money which has now failed & those who lent them the money want it back.... We're now in the EC & euro with no control of our currency or interest rates and have to do what the Germans, French & ECB dictate.... Now the ECB & co care little about Joe Soap & until Joe Soap & friends start to rock their boat you & me will continue to be buggered by these bodies... you have a small voice there are plenty who have a lot less of a (or no) voice living with huge (& growing) commitments with little or no income & your asking these people to stump up more taxes to pay your salaries.... Now I appreciate you do a difficult messy job but you have some security & until we all act together to tell the ECB & those who lent us this money irresponsibly where to go it's down hill for us all...
Previous recessions we were in control of our own currency and our government could introduce a wage freeze which with high inflation really was a wage cut but somehow didn't seem like it but now the German economy is all important what they need must come first....

You have my sympathy but until we all act as a community & clamor loud enough together to tell the ECB & friends where to go + take the high pensions off & start to jail those we elected who acted irresponsibly we'll all fall....
