    Hi all
I have never bought a Diesel before but am considering a 2005 Volvo XC 90 2.4 D. I have always bought petrol and always with 50k miles or less on the clock.

Am I likely to expect more trouble when buying a car with over 100k on the clock even if it is Diesel or would it be fair to say that 50k petrol is equivalent to 100k Diesel?

    Thanks all

It would depend how old it is.

Thats not high miles. Low miles diesels seem to give more trouble than higher milers

    No it wouldn't.

It would depend how well it was serviced ;)

OP has it any service history? I've heard a number of people complain about gearbox and drivetrain issues with these even with a FSH. Common enough issues apparently

Mileage is only one variable out of so many. That is not high mileage for the year I bought a 2008 diesel last year with nearly that mileage. More importantly has the vehicle been minded has it service history. If the jeep has been well minded then I don't see the mileage being a major problem obviously you should still budget a certain amount for maintance. It really is impossible to tell without seeing the jeep but I wouldn't consider 106k miles high mileage for a 2005 diesel if anything it's low mileage for the year.

yes it apparently does but yet to inspect it!! thanks, those issues would be pricey if had to be addressed. have heard it is expensive to run and reliability questionable

When you see the service history make sure to call the garage who done the servicing to confirm if it legit

yes thanks for that, I have done that before but often find the garages unwilling to give out the info for some bizarre reason

I've always been asked to supply the reg number and chassis number.

I just explain I'm looking to buy the car and just want to confirm the service history on the car. Causally ask them at what date and mileage the last service was done.

Never had an issue myself other than they wanting specific car details.

The mileage isn't what you should be worried about, its the service history(which you can check somtimes) and how the car was used(which is harder to check) that would be the major concerns.

If the car has done 106k of school runs and shopping trips then you can expect plenty of issues.

Looking at things like wear on the internal and external door handles, gear knob, brake pedal etc can give indications of lots of stop/start urban driving or long distance extra urban driving.
