A good standing throw in javelin?

What would be a good standing throw for a 16 year old boy? my best standing throw is 27.30m with a 500g (i dont have access to a heavier one).
Also is it easier to throw a 500 or 800 gram javelin, I know it sounds like I stupid q but im not sure.
One more question, how much further should I be able to thro with a run up?

Hi Kev, strong arm you have there. I imagine any throws coach would be interested to work with you. Here are the UK U17 javelin rankings http://www.thepowerof10.info/rankings/rankinglist.aspx?event=JT700&agegroup=U17&sex=M&year=2012 Btw, these distances are with the 700g.

You'd be wanting to be aiming for 40s high off a properly-drilled run-up. Anything over 50 and you'd be a very competitive athlete.

Don't try to throw above your designated weight unless a coach asks you to do do as part of a programme.

    Good luck, Ireland needs throwers.

makes a change from the "what would be a good 5k time for a..." questions :)

Not one to give javelin advice given the fact I "threw" it a tad over 8m last time I did it :o but I see a fair few guys do some standing throws as a warm up and you'd be amazed how far they can throw it. At a guess (Which is solely based on what I have witnessed and could be way off) I would say 75-80% of what they can throw with a proper run up.

    What is harder to throw a 800g, 700g, or a 500g javelin?

Which one can give me more distance, (im 16, and im a boy).

Im only able to use a 500g as it is the only one available, will this make any difference in competition or training?

Why don't you acknowledge the answers to your previous question?

In fairness he is only 16 and probably not aware of correct protocol or basic manners on Boards.ie

Kevj96, when you post a question and get a good response you should acknowledge the response.

If you have more questions by all means ask them after that, you will find that with a bit of courtesy you will get much more help.

    Happy throwing.

Oh sorry, I only made the account last weekend, thanks christy.
Thank you for the advice, I wasn't meant to put that q in this thread, sorry if I seemed ungrateful.
Thank you for the advice :)

As to your question, I can't think how it would be easier to throw a heavier implement. Sure, Pitkamaki might feel it 'odd' throwing a 400 but it wouldn't half go a long way :)

Ok, thanks just thought it might be, cos its harder 4 me to throw a 400g.

Would you not be putting more energy into a heavier weighted projectile though? For some reason it seems to make sense that throwing it correctly you'd be able to throw the heavier one further. Of course there is a point at which the extra weight becomes a negative, but you could throw a javelin much further than you could throw a biro for an extreme example.

Have you thought about joining a club or going along to talk to a coach. I know many clubs would not have a javelin coach but there are many that have.

I belong to a club, but its a very small one, we only have 1 coach, tho he is a good one. Im the only 1 in the club who does javelin and because there aren't many competitions with javelin yet I'm doing it at home and long jump and 100m at training.

Where are you based? There are throws workshops you could attend for more coaching - one in the 12th of April in Cork, a shot and javelin workshop in Tipperary later in April, more through the year

What part of Donegal? Finn Valley are having a track meet on the 24th of April and there will be Javelin competitions on. If you get down there I'm sure there would be 1 or 2 coaches who would give you some advice

    Not that big.

It's not unusual to be hesitant about getting out and competing but you won't really find out how well you can throw until you get out there and you may learn something.
