Seriously thinking about investing in either one of these, but have never even driven either one of them, what known problems are there?, what's the power delivery like and what's the real world mpg like, I have experience boxer petrols before, love the power but its impossibly to keep fuel in them, and I know the old Lexus 6 cylinder petrol engines were not really up to hard driving, all help much appreciated.

The power delivery of the Lexus is all over the place, lots of lag then a burst of power. 6th gear is pretty much unusable at legal speeds.
I always liked the way the IS drives though, a 250 is a nice car. The 220d isn't as dependable as you'd think.

Surely a 3 series should be in the running too?

No, i've had experience with BMW's before and there not for me, the lexus prices for a 2008 are hovering around the 10 to 12 mark, compared to 15 to 17 for the subaru, ya I was reading about the gear ratios on the lexus, 250s petrol is it?

Yeah 250 is petrol, but if you're thinking fuel economy then its not the car for you.

averaging about 500miles a week at the moment so need something a bit economical, currently getting 18mpg in a jeep, just seen there that the lexus is nearly 200 euros more expensive to tax for the year than the subaru.

Yeah, ,the tax on them was high enough till 2010 when the detuned 200d model came out.

    Have you considered an accord?

That's less than €4 a week, hardly worth worrying about when your spending many thousands on a car.

The Legacy diesel of that vintage are rare and anything with decent mileage is expensive to buy. The IS220 doesn't have a decent engine, it is rough, unrefined and far from reliable.

I'd be looking at a Honda Accord or the cheaper Mazda 6 2.2d.

I've got an is220d and it's been brilliant in terms of reliability.

The car has just sky of 300km and it's be very very reliable, most reliable car I've had in fact.

Only thing that has failed in 7 years is a pulley. Easy fix.
