seat belts and car reliability

Excuse my ignorance if this is already covered in depth. The other day i was driving myself and 3 friends over to a talk in a local college. As a habit i got into the car and put on my seatbelt. As we all disembarked i noticed only the click from my belt, none of my other friends wore a seat belt. I never even thought of glancing, as my own family and another set of friends who a carry more often always put them on by habit. Im 18 and can just afford my diesel, penalty points are out of the question. Thinking back I thought i could remember from my theory test only 17yrs and younger must wear seat belts? Am I right and regardless any ideas of how to get my friends to wear them with out being a utter douche. In the end of the day i never want to be at a friends funeral and have it linked to me in anyway.

One other question is im actually only going to college in sept 2013 with some luck and it is quite possible ill end up driving. At the moment im in my mums ford focus. Great car no problems out of it and im getting 5.8L per litre mixed cold driving. For next year I may need my own car. I was looking at the old model toyota avensis and corolla about 98-05. a golf or polo 00-04 , corsa, another focus/ fiesta and a wildcard as a A3. Ive got about 6000 to spend on the car, ive got insurance is covered already. Anyone got any advice on which car and its reliability. Oh and one last note, would love to try keep to a 1.6 if i can or higher. Around the time ill be getting it ill be fortunate to have nearly 2 yrs NCB as a named driver. Many thanks in advance

Everybody in the car is required by law to wear a safety belt and it is up to the driver to make sure passengers under 17 are following the law, but now you can help them to keep everyone safe.

Found this line in the seatbelt sheriff "Everybody in the car is required by law to wear a safety belt and it is up to the driver to make sure passengers under 17 are following the law". Where does that leave my responsibility to those over 17, I presume i can still get points for them?

Did a lesson based on this chap with my 1st and 2nd class recently, they all got a "seatbelt sheriff" badge courtesy of the rsa. I met a parent recently who proceeded to **** me from a height because her young lad has them driven mad about putting on the belt!

For kids you get penalty points, they are not expected to know the ROTR.
For adults they get points (or whatever the gardai will throw at them).

Thats what i was thinking but wasn't sure. Still the responsibility to the parents is enough to make me make them. Been witness to a fatal car crash, stopped a guy drowning in his own blood. It was more then enough to make me never take a chance in a car.

Out of curiosity, how can a person receive a punishment for that if they don't have a drivers license?

I think it would be very strange in this day and age in Ireland for people to not wear seat belts, its the equivalent of someone not closing a door but at this stage I would imagine its 2nd nature to most.

It would go to court and they would get the fine.
