    Hey folks,
I hope to get 2011/2012 insignia with prices in the south around €25k.
I want to get a high a spec as possible.
Checking in the North and the same or better car retails around €16k + €4/5k so in theory a better deal.

Am I missing something or is importing the way to go?

Also any feedback on the insignia would be great

    Cheers
    B

Importing is the best way of getting a higher spec model cheaper than the base model here

Just keep in mind, the Vauxhaul badge isn't worth the same for resale

Why is that? It's the exact same car.

Because of Joe Public's perception. Also the OP said he/she can save about €4k over an Opel version. You cannot expect to buy it at Vauxhall prices and sell it at Opel prices.

Not so sure with that. I recently sold Vauxhall Astra at the same price as Opel Astra was selling at. Maybe I was lucky

    I think you were.

I bought a 2008 Vauxhall Corsa Design from Wales, brand new. I brought her straight over, paid the VRT and she was on Irish plates. I serviced her every year at the local Opel garage. Last year, when she was four years old, I tried to sell her. The car was mint. Near showroom condition, polished to the max, and had just 35k miles on the clock. Opel Corsa Designs (mid-high end model) were, at the time priced at around €8000. Opel Corsa Clubs (low-mid range model) were priced at around €7k - €7.5k. Mine being in such good condition, I was expecting at least €8k, maybe more. So I advertised at €8.5k. No one was interested though. A few calls were received, but nothing serious. I dropped it to €8k. Still nothing.

I think there's a fear in Ireland of buying imports, perhaps because of a (an incorrect) belief of high insurance prices, or the large amount of salt that's perceived to be on English roads (incidentally, my car had never been on an English road) or perhaps it's just snobbery.

In the end, I sold my Vauxhall Corsa to an English woman, living in Ireland, for €7000. I was gutted. It was well below the price of the Opel lesser-model.

So, unless you plan either on keep the car forever, or on selling it somewhere in the UK, I'd advise not to buy a Vauxhall.

8.5k is made money for a 4 year old corsa. The GF bought a 4 year old SXi a while back with lower mileage than yours for 5300. I think the issue with your sale was you over valuing the car significantly.

Yes, exactly the same car, I'm not disputing that. You'll find out when you to trade or sell privately.

I don't think so, the prices I stated in in the previous post were all from CarZone, which was where I was advertising mine. So unless everybody selling Corsas in CarZone was overvaluing all their cars..

    EDIT: See for yourself..

Surely he's saving 4k compared to an Opel is because of our stupid VRT rates? I understand that people are more cautious around imports but when it's the exact same car with a different badge from the same factory made by the same people it should make no difference.

The problem there was you were using Carzones prices which are usually either all dealers or just overpriced in the first place. You should have used Donedeal ads as a price point and to advertise yours.

Edit: sorry for the double post. Only saw that comment now.

I'm not disputing the fact that they are the same car except for the badging. The OP will have to pay VRT here on the Vauxhall too. Joe Public knows the Vauxhall is an import so the theory is that it was imported at a saving over the Opel version so why would they pay Opel prices for something that didn't cost the same as an Opel to import? Of course the price difference becomes less relevant as the car gets older to the point where it becomes irrelevant.

Put it this way, if I was a trader who imported a 2012 Vauxhall Insignia at a substantial saving over a 2012 Opel Insignia , would you pay the same money for both if spec and mileage were like for like?

Me personally? Yes I would pay the same, even if he made a saving. I know it's the exact same car and it is probably in better condition than an Irish one due to England/NI having better roads and I'd like to think they take better care of their cars over Joe soap here.
