    Hi All,

Have a trek roadbike and the are well known for having a substandard saddle as standard. After 200km you really know about it!

Spoke to a guy today at the bike show about the Fizik saddle (Fi'zi'k) and this seems a good option for an upgrade. Its custom made, apparently, for your body shape and you can mix and match until you get the one that best suits. Salesman reckoned it would cost approx €100-€130 or so which is pricy.

Anyone use these or have an opinion? is there better options.

    Thanks

I've got Fizik Arione on my road bikes and they are excellent. It came with my Focus, so when I built a bike I just matched it. To be honest, though I also have a Selle Italia X1 on my XC bike and I wouldn't notice any difference. The Selle Italia cost 15 quid.

Lots of people find fizik saddles very comfortable. I am not one of them however..

Fizik Aliante- Its curved shape forces you to sit in the one position, while it's initially very comfortable the padding was just too soft and squidgy. It caused me all manner of numbness and discomfort especially on longer rides..

Fizik Antares- The plastic hull was just too flexible..I reckon this is aimed at sub 70kg riders. The padding was much firmer than the dreaded aliante, but its sharp edges caused me horrible chafing and soreness on the outer edges of my perineum...

Fizik Arioine- Strangely enough I found this saddle quite comfortable for rides lasting less than two hours..and incredibly un-comfortable for the third hour. I guess its just too narrow for my wide undercarrige.

Using a specialized romin saddle now and find it very comfortable. The great thing about specialized is, they make the romin saddle in lots of different widths 130mm 143mm 155mm and 168mm... You have to visit a specialized dealer like cycle ways in Dublin to be measured for one of these, but I promise you it will be well worth the trip.

I use a Fizik Aliante, a less luxurious one that came stock with a Focus Cayo (bought it off Beasty).

I don't find it to have too much padding, but I do notice that it forces you to sit in the one position, not great for rides lasting longer than two hours. Would be tempted to try an Antares, if I saw a secondhand one about.

The default saddle that came with my Defy 3 is really cutting the bollox off me. Ive tilted down a wee bit but I think I may need some periniem relief. Im still heavy at 16 stone and not used to road riding position yet. Suggestions?

I'm another fan of Specialised, a Romin Expert 143mm in my case. I persisted with a Fizik Arione until I couldn't take the discomfort any longer, then tried a Fizik Aliante which fared better but also left me numb and sore after strenuous efforts on the bike.

Next up was the Romin, which seemed to solve those problems entirely, but during a bike fit the fitter leveled the saddle across the full length (it's meant to be leveled along the middle third only), and it started causing me problems. I moved to a Prologo Nago Evo 141mm which was great for a while but then started to hurt too, so I moved back to the Romin but this time leveled as it should be and the problems went away again.

For me I think that getting the width of the saddle right was very important in tackling the problems (the Fizik saddles are narrower than the Romin, though the Aliante is closer), but also the leveling the saddle correctly was crucial. Bike fit generally is important too though I think, as a saddle that is too high or too low may be the cause of some issues - some of the saddles I had the most serious issues with were ones I used while my saddle was too high and it's quite possible it played a significant part in causing the discomfort.
