BMW turbo

Short version - Turbo blown on my 2008 520d - only has 60,000 miles - full bmw service history, verified by BMW - only have it 6 1/2 months so warranty I got when I bought it has run out.

Its my 5th BMW and have to say am really sick and tired of BMW's despite the fact that I have always loved them - between this and the stupid runflats I will never buy one again.

Anyway now that I got that bit off my chest am wondering if I am better off getting this fixed myself (have access to mechanic who can get the parts and do the work for me so not as expensive as a dealer) or should I try to get BMW to cover it or do I have a chance with them?

    Appreciate any feedback..

Does it have a full service history? (preferably a BMW one) If so I'd be bringing it to the main dealer and see if BMW will cover it. I suspect they would.

Edit; just read it has a full sh. In that case definately bring it to the dealer. I'd be surprised if they didn't cover alot of the cost.

Thats very informative thanks mfceiling - bottom line was that BMW coughed up for cost of turbo and you covered labour?? How much did labour cost you in the end?

Mine is a UK import but was bmw approved and has the fsh. Seems that I should be ignoring BMW's guide to oil changes and changing oil more regular - that's clever - I am about 500 miles over service - is booked in for next week with BMW so would BMW use this against me.

Is currently sitting in my mate's garage with turbo on the floor so going nowhere fast - I assume it has to been done by BMW for them to cover cost of turbo?

Fact you are booked will probably help. BMW will insist that they do it. Fact it was BMW approved will mean you are safer. I thought they gave 1 year warranty on their approved used?

It was imported for me by an independent garage - he gave me a six month warranty - must dig it out and see what it says..

Wouldn't disagree with you and re the pushing the engine to the limit is exactly what my mate said...

I'm not interested in taking the might of BMW inc. on though - life is too short - just want to get out of this with a lesson learned and as lightly on my pocket as possible...

Yes you're right I bought one of these to make up for my other inadequacies - thank you for pointing that out - and that's your first post here - hope the rest of them live up to the high standard you have set here

The service intervals is too long on them imo. Mine is 2008 also with 75k miles on the clock, I have the oil and filters changed every 15k km and still on the original turbo so far. No way I would leave it until the 30k km recommended service interval.

OP, when you get it replaced you need to find out what caused it to blow in the first place.

Im speaking from my own experience with renault turbos
Much was blamed on oil quality service intervals but the bottom line was the quality of the turbo itself. They simply just ware out !

Have learned that lesson now - how easy is it to find out what caused it to blow?
