I can't believe I'm replying to this thread but I'm interested to know why the OP thinks people would contribute to a publication if they didn't believe in what they were saying.

Ever heard of satire? Or the phenomenon of "poe"?

    Edit: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Poe's_Law
    Edit 2:
Poe's Law: Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake it for the genuine article.

Poe's Corollary: ”It is impossible for an act of Fundamentalism to be made that someone won't mistake for a parody."

The Poe Paradox: "In any fundamentalist group, a paradox exists where any new person (or idea) sufficiently fundamentalist to be accepted by the group is likely to be so ridiculous that they risk being rejected as a parodist (or parody)." e.g "Any new member of the CP (Conservapedia) project who's not as conservative as them is liable to be chucked out. However, any new member who is as conservative as them is in serious danger of being called a parodist, and chucked out. Is this the first living example of a Poe Paradox?"

Because a lot of people who push all that religion crap do so out of self-interest while living a life that doesn't reflect what they preach.

They wouldn't even have to be trolls. I presume they get paid, and a lot of people - most people, I would say - will work for a company with less than okay ethics if it means a decent pay packet at the end of the month. Or they will justify it in some way.

I just checked the latest issue online. they compare Enda Kenny to Herod.

Looks like enda's going up in the world.

Edit. And I just found this jewel.
What I find really puzzling is why
so many educated folk opt to be nohope
    atheists,
    and it is an option,
following fashion. It is rarely the
    result of deep thought.
    It is such a crack-pot option. I
mean, who in his or her right
mind would choose to believe that
    the whole creation is simply
    absurd, without rhyme or reason,
the result of a billion billion
    freaky accidents?
    Scientists above all should be
able to see that such nonsense
    destroys even science.

    Again, who would choose to
believe that life has no ultimate
purpose or meaning, to live without
ultimate hope? I mean, this is
    crazy stuff.
Which brings us, I think, to the
fundamental issue – what do they
gain by such a weird choice? But
that will have to wait for another
    day.

The only people who read it are fundamentalists anyway so what difference would it make? It's not like it's a paper that is supposed to be unbiased or anything, it's propaganda directed towards a very specific group of people with very specific beliefs.. The only way they could wind people up with their audience is by saying stuff that goes against the ethos of the paper, and then it wouldn't get published by definition. They're not trolling, they're just nuts. Unless there are people going out of their way to read a newspaper that they know by definition they won't agree with and will p1ss them off, in which case they're nuts too and serves them right for getting annoyed.

It's a dangerous paper in the ridiculous nature of what it says.

What if the writers of it, you know, actually DO believe what they write? Does that give anyone the right to make fun of them? They probably come on here and see the fundamentalist athiest viewpoints that are commonplace on this website, and think the exact same of you people, as what all you people seem to think of them!

Yes it does. I'm allowed think that someones opinion is silly. And I'm allowed say it. And they're allowed to say it about mine.

That's called a dialogue. And if any society wants to make sure it doesn't become totalitarian, there should be open and free discussion.

It's a good job it isn't a Jewish publication, or one preaching Islam, or no-one would be able to comment in a locked thread.:P

There may be quite a number. I'm not sure if this is specific to the States, though I'm guessing it is, but had you heard of The Clergy Project?

Anyway, very few priests these days are young. The average age is 64. Go back a few decades and families would send kids off to be priests or nuns as it was the done thing at one time, though we are long gone from that.

Are you aware of a Jewish or Muslim publication thats shoved in Irish doors containing the same level of right wing anti-gay, anti-contraceptive nonsense?

The clergy project? How many aren't actually pastors, just atheists pretending? Is that what you mean? Well, no, I don't think that likely as they are very secretive of their membership and who is there. The people are all there anonymously and the vetting process is very careful to maintain the anonymity of the people who join up. So, no, I don't think there are people who aren't clergy/ex clergy amongst their numbers.

Edit: For more on that, check this out: http://www.clergyproject.org/join

I think that's the main reason why the Catholic church in Ireland has caused so many problems, because a lot of the people were performing their family duties by joining up, and they just weren't cut out for the job, and didn't give a sh1t about the people they were supposed to be responsible for.

I wouldn't know, the last thing I would ever in a million years consider reading is a religious publication from any source.

There are enough laughs and facepalms in After Hours for me to waste any time looking for them in those "thingies".

Nothing interesting/worthwhile to post? What is your issue, exactly? Not knowing what a Poe is? Not thinking it can be ascribed to Alive? See, posting stuff of no value like the above doesn't get you very far.

That Alive newspaper does be available alongside local newspapers at the ATM machine in Clearwater, Finglas. Why?! Hardly anyone takes a copy, the rack is always full!!

I notice recently that Alive do put a pretty Latino girl on the front page lately, is this an attempt at seduction?!

No but we get lots of flyers from four star pizza.

I have no choice but to read them from beginning to end.

    Its an outrage!

    http://www.alive.ie/archives.html

Most of them have a girl on the front.

I saw one last year with cameron Diaz on the front. The article that mentioned her said that she's said it was hard to make a relationship last, or something along those lines. The article then said it was her fault because she'd dated too many people and had turned into the parcel in a game of pass the parcel.

Good healthy catholic attitide to relationships and women right there

My problem with it is not that its conservative as such but that its utterly boring- its like its aimed at children or the mildly retarded.

I see it as Imperialism- it comes across as the worst type of American Protestantism, Ima prod myself, but this type of Protestantism does not belong in Ireland.
