Hi all potentially buying a car today, privately. What should exchange hands for the sale to be valid?

    Much appreciated.

A printout of the guide at the top of this forum. And a stapler, for the forehead.

    Cash ;)

All else being equal and you buy the car you give the seller the cash, you receive the car,as many keys as possible and ideally a big wallet of service history and invoices and you put your name, address and signature on the change of ownership section of the VLC (Vehicle license cert) and the responsibility is then on the seller to post that to Shannon.

Bring a mechanic with you to go over the car before you pay anything, always safer to do so.

This is a must,I'm guessing you are not mechanically minded there is someone nearly once a week has a post about they bought a dodgy car..
If you can't get someone to look at it my only advice is try get a invoice for the car at least you might have some come back,

    .........

For the sale to be valid the signed and dated VLC change of ownership is to be sent off to the DOE in Shannon, if you've a decent camera phone a picture of it might do no harm :)

Best thing is to post it off together so bringing an envelope with a stamp is often a good idea.

This is so simple and can save a lot of hassle with Peace Commissioners etc. down the line.

But for the love of God, BRING A MECHANIC WITH YOU!
