Solid fuel boilers

Hi all I'm new to boards so forgive me for my silly questions. I am planning on installing a 25kw solid fuel boiler moderator in my garage in conjunction with my oil boiler. I have seen 3/4 of these boliers working and they seem to a great job. I live in a small estate with a house behind me and I am just concerned about the smoke from my flue that will be installed externally on the end of my garage, will it blow in on my neighbour who is about 30 ft from my garage. I will be burning mostly timber with the odd bit of cardboard. I am planning on putting the flue about 5 ft over the apex of my garage. If any body has a solid fuel boiler installed all options will be considered. I'm eating drinking and sleeping solid fuel boilers at the minute help badly wanted :):)

I did it last September. The flue is about 15 meters from my house on the far side of my garage and it's no problem at all. Nearest neighbour's house would be about 100 meters and I've heard no complaints. I'm burning coal 24 hours a day.

Any links to the type of boiler you're installing?

Thanks westwicklow1 that's nice to here. Have nothing in mind but I have seen 3 of this type working and they people are all very impressed http://www.solidfuelboilers.ie/products/unica-universal-boilers/unica-sensor with them. I have also looked at Defro KDR plus standard. Have you any recommendation ?? Do you burn just coal and how effective do you find it. The people I have spoke with haven't turned on the oil since fitting and there houses have never been warmer , would you agree?? My house is 2200 sq f with 15 rads easly heated but when the oil is turned off the heat is gone, my house is 5 years old. I will be burning mostly timber but like I said the only concern is the bothering the neighbours. How high did you go with the flue on your garage??. Do you think it's the way to go and is it cost efftive.

I get approx three weeks from a 650kg bag at a cost of €95.00 per bag. Thats for 24/7 heating and hot water in a 2400 sq ft bungalow.

I had a look around at various offerings and then went to look at installations and finally decided on what i have. I only burn coal and it's absolutely awesome. 24/7 heat and hot water for less that a third of what I would have spent on oil this season.

Yep, me too. Agree completely. I reckon I'll have recovered the cost in 2.5 years.

    Exactly my experience.

I can't offer any advice on burning timber. My boiler will burn it but as yet I haven't done so. The flue is about two meters above the gutter on the garage but not as high as the ridge. At this time it certainly is the way to go imho because I doubt if oil will ever come down to what it was when we didn't really complain about the price of it.

Best of luck in your hunt and if you want to see the boiler in action send me a pm.

Iv'e heard it called pea coal, rice coal. Singles, which are slightly bigger also burn very well in it.

I went for the GB-V8 down towards the bottom of this product list....

    http://www.greenburn.ie/downloads/coal-boiler-prices.pdf

I didn't fit a buffer tank. I didn't look at the boiler you are considering but I wanted a boiler with both an automatic (coal) and a manual (logs turf etc.) ability. I bought from Greenburn.ie and €5k was all in including delivery, fitting and all fittings (copper pipe brass fittings, pipe insulation, flue etc.).

Hi westwicklow1 would it be possible to get a contact no and name for the person that is supplying you with the coal. How did you find green burn to deal with, and have you have any hassle with your boiler since fitting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭japbyrne

Contact details for pea coal supplier please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,893 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

The pea coal referred to is also known as singles .

There are two varieties - bituminous and smokeless .

The bitu type is smallest and like peas . whereas , the smokeless variety is best in larger size and burns hotter

Are you sure its leaking? Upon start up after after being off for the summer, condensation is normal on the outside between casing and insulation. Have you stripped it down?

Thanks for reply, sorry I did'nt check in sooner.
yes my passat fk 40 has leaked in the bottom of the fire chamber, it is in fact almost badly pitted the full length of the chamber. The supplier or the manufacturer Passat energi have no interest helping me.
