    Hi All,

I have an opening measuring 4.6 metres wide and 2.45 metreshigh that I need to fill with a glazing unit. I’d like to put a unit in thegoes from floor to roof and I’m thinking about dividing the length into 4sections with the two middle sections being sliding doors that slide away fromeach other. I’ve spoken to a few window companies about this and they have allpretty much said that I’d need to use an aluminium unit because of the size of theopening. I plan on using PVC triple glazed windows in the rest of the house. Myproblem with the aluminium unit is that they don’t come with any certificationor exact u-value! However a window company that I spoke to today said that theycould provide a PVC sliding unit that would be fully certified and they didn’tthink that there would be any issues with the strength of the unit!

What do people think? Would a PVC unit be strong enough tolast?

    Thanks

uPVC - most suppliers will not make any sliding system above 2100mm, you might find a couple of suppliers that can offer you a lift slide uPVC system, but you will find that this profile type is more expensive.
Aluminium - very poor u-values, unless you go for a very top end system, which can be very expensive.
Timber/Aluclad - it will be possible to get a sliding door at the height you want using Timber / Aluclad, it will be more expensive than uPVC (unless it is uPVC lift slide, in which case it will probably be price comparable).

I would recommend that last option.
