Our instructor says if you stop for more than a couple of years you start at the beginning again - unless you got a black belt.

As far as I can tell it depends a bit on who you train with. A lot of clubs will let you come back at the grade you were at though you might have to wait for your next grading until your overall standard is back to where it should be. See what your old instructor comes back with. BTW what grade were you?

It is something that depends on what club you are training with. Ask the trainer that you are starting with there are various approaches that can be taken.

If you are asked to start again, try a different club.
There is no reason why you can't hold your grade and train yourself back up to that standard and then present yourself for testing etc. how quick you progress depends on how hard and often you train.

If you came to my club you could maintain your rank, it is after all YOUR rank. Don't be minding what half of these fat masters have to say, chances are they couldn't tie your laces anyway ;)

no way you should have to regrade from the start no matter how long you were out,you paid for those years and gradings. The coach should just hold ye back for as long as needed to get up to your grades standard,if thats a year or more then thats what ye do.
