Counseling?

I suffer from depression and anxiety and my (former) psychiatrist referred me for counseling last August. I had my assessment for it a couple of weeks ago and I felt that it went really badly. My actual appointment is in a week and a half and I don't know if I even want it. I'm affected really badly, and while I'm stable enough at the moment, I'm really dreading this.

I was in private counseling before but I quit because I felt it wasn't working. I hated every appointment, hated the counselor for being to hippy dippy, just everything about it. I don't know what this is going to do. I'm not even 100% sure what type of therapy it's going to be as I had a panic attack halfway though the assessment and can barely remember a thing after that. I don't know if this will do anything and I don't even know if I want it or not. I don't know what I want to gain from it and whether or not I should cancel the appointment or not.
Any ideas? I feel like there are only two options - get stuck into something that I don't want to do and hate it or cancel and that will be the end of any help I can get from the HSE.

There is a third option: try it for a while. If it's not working, you can then finish it.

This counsellor might suit you better than the last one.

i feel you should always examine the feelings you have towards a counselor. Do they remind you of someone from your own past, is there a reason for the feelings you feel there(are you feeling a version of the anxiety you feel in daily life for example, & if so then it presents an opportunity to get past it(the anxiety) in that setting), can you overcome the feelings(or use them to your advantage) to get on with doing the work for yourself.

Sometimes going through counseling is just gonna be hard work. On the other hand it could just be that you got a bad counselor or one just not particularly suited to you. At one stage of your life you might only be ready to go so far with it, & that might change later. Maybe this counselor will be better, or more suited to you. You won't know unless you give it a try.

I would agree with the other posters; people vary, so will counsellors, there are different types of therapy. Do you know what type you will be going for now?

People change over time, you might be in a better place to start the process now. But like the other poster said, counselling can be really hard work. It's examining everything that brought you to where you are now, but it's done in tiny steps.
Some weeks you might make no progress so don't be hard on yourself if you blank and can go no further, this is part of the process, when it happens there is a chance to examine what was going on right before you blanked- came across resistance.

nothing ventured, nothing gained. Best of luck
