Hi all, my son is heading to the states for the summer. Would it work out much cheaper for him to buy an Android (PAYG) over there....rather than buy one here before he leaves, and unlock it to use a US sim.
He is really only looking for the cheapest deal on a 4" Android, something like the Huawei Ascend G300.
Presumably if it works out cheaper to buy over there he can then get it unlocked when he returns.

Some US operators don't use SIMs. The phone unit is sealed.

So, before even considering buying a phone, he will need to check if it uses a SIM or not.

Also, you will need to check their policy to get a phone unlocked.

Try some of the American sites that sell unlocked phone online. Mind you. if he's only going for the Summer, he should get a cheapo phone that won't attract the local scumbags. He can buy the big 4 ins Ascend the day before he comes back.

They do 'GO' phones which are the equiv to PAYG, but cost a fortune and you need a credit card to top them up.

The phones cost €30-50 and come with maybe a tenner credit, it then costs 99c a day say to use plus whatever number of minutes/texts you get.

You can buy go-phone topup cards in most big US stores (Walmart, K-mart, even 7-Eleven).

I have a go-phone SIM (AT&T). Price plan is $25 for a month of unlimited calls and texts. Data is extra $25 for 1gb data.

You can buy the handset alone (still cheaper than here), and then buy a go-phone SIM.
