a one owner car and i think they were marketed as a 350sl despite having
the 4.5l engine, just wondering what designation i go with for the shipping
    company?

If the model is 350SL, then go with that

Much of a muchness anyway :)

Didn't Dades have one just like that, or was it an engine replacement?

Thats correct, the US 350 is a 4.5 liter, it was around the time of the first oil crisis and they wanted to give the appearance of responsibility:rolleyes:

Some Mercs had strange designations - 190E 1.8 / 2.0, 280SE 3.5/4.5, ...... so the cc will always be in the 'capacicy' column and 'model' will be whatever number is on the tail :confused:

    Well remembered!

I had an actual 350SL that had had the original 3.5l engine replaced at some point by the 4.5l engine from the SE. Slightly different situation...

OP, I would say your SL is a 350SL regardless of what size engine it has. I think the US 4.5l engine was "de-tuned" somewhat from the 450SL they sold in Europe. :)
Does it have the big impact bumpers? Any pics?
