Squealing from brakes - Needs a clean ?

Anyone know anywhere around Ballyfermot/Clondalkin that would be able to sort out blowing some dust/dirt from the brakes of a car ?

There is a squealing coming from the car, and it stops when the brake pedal is touched, according to a mechanic it needs to be blown out with a compressor to get rid of some dust/dirt particles and it should be grand.

Try the air pump in a petrol station.

Atlas on Kylemore did this on herself's car once, for the same reason. We asked them to check the squeak and to be fair they inspected, told us what was up, and blew them clean, without charge (though we were buying 2 tyres). However, I'd expect them to charge some sort of inspection fee for this if you're not buying tyres, and they'll probably advise you to have a proper look anyway.

Give them a ring and ask, I always found them very reasonable when I lived over that direction.

Sounds like more than the dust and dirt which has built up on the brakes!

citroen by any chance? Its can be caused by corrosion on the discs, you need to get them into a garage and get them re greased as far as i remember it. Very annoying noise..

edit just found on another site the proper explanation bring it into garage anyway would be my 2 cents.
Brake squeal is caused by the pad vibrating at high speed on the disc you should find under a hard stop the squealing stops.
there are a few things to try and solve it:

strip the calipers down, remove the pads and clean out all the pad grooves and location in the caliper, smear a thin layer of copper grease on the metal back of the pads where they touch the piston and where they rub in the tracks of the caliper also clean the caliper tracks of debris and dust before re-fitting the pads.

I had a mechanic look at it and he advised that it just need a good blast of compressed air to sort it out.

Will give ATLAS a go, thanks.

Dont put grease on Discs. :pac:

As per your quote though, Ive never heard of squealing being caused by dust, just lack of pad or grease on the back of the brake pad.

i'm guessing they're rear drum brakes as opposed to discs?

Its more than likely two things

The type of pad you are using creates reasonably alot of dust and its dry thus making the noise against the disk.

    OR

The pistons touching the rear of the pad.

The second one is quite common and can be solved easily with Copper Grease on the piston between piston and pad rear.

The first one does happen depending on pad choice. This is solved by changing the pad to an alternate brand / type

Jaysus lads, I probably should have pointed out that what I know about cars could be written on the back of a stamp by a two year old who was reared in the middle of the Sahara !!
