Are "Import" Reg Plates still being issued?

When Revenue introduced "Import" registration plates the story was that these "had" to be introduced due to a "computer problem", and that this "computer problem" would be rectified after 2012. In reality we all know that it was SIMI who pushed for these 'Import' reg plates to make imported vehicles stand out and appear 'less desirable'. (The system was so ill-thought-out that even vintage cars are issued with high reg plates - I have seen a 1932 MG with the reg plate '32-D-120001'?!)

Has anybody here recently registered an imported vehicle (and recieved a high registration number)?
...or have Revenue finally resolved their "computer problem"??

Also, is it only private sellers who recieved 'high' reg numbers (i.e. do garages get normal (next-in-line) reg numbers when registering their owns cars/sales stock)??

Examples of High "Import" Reg Numbers -

    Dublin 08-D-120001
    Donegal 05-DL-11001
    Kildare 10-KE-16001
    Wicklow 07-WW-11001
    Wexford 09-WX-11001

...and Dublin (1932 MG car) 32-D-120001

Anything up to December 2010 gets the long reg and anything after Jan 2011 is normal.

Really? I though that system was here to stay!?

11 Reg imports get "normal" numbers. We had to bring a couple in last year and they were issued 11D43xxx plates in September 2012.

Presume 12 plate imports are the same.

I was issued 12D41xxx on Tuesday.

I was pleasantly surprised, I expected 12D12xxxxx. Blends in a bit better!

So do you mean that anything registered prior to that date gets a 'high' reg plate?

Or any vehicle first registered before Dec 2010 (abroad) and imported to Ireland (still) gets a high plate?

Or, having read previous posts, perhaps Revenue automatically give people a 'high' reg number - unless they are ASKED for a lower number??

I assume that means cars manufactured before December 2010 will still get the high numbers..? Not very clear...

My wife's 11D import brought in around the same time got the big number.

Nope you get a choice of zv or year

That is the car I am thinking of (apologies, my original post shoould have read 32-D-120003').

Perhaps the owner of the MG is 'hedging his bets' and hoping a better 'Vintage' Plate System will be put in place in the coming year(s)? (I believe the IVVCC are pushing for improved/appropriate 'Vintage' plates).

By opting for the 'year' plate (32-D-120003) as opposed to a 'ZV' plate (which are now too long with 7 digits i.e. 'ZV 00000') - he or a future owner have the option of applying for a more appropriate plate if/when they finally arrive.

So it appears that all pre-Dec 2010 vehicles are will now be getting the high numbers for ever??

Though, having said that, a previous poster said he got a low number when he specifically requested one?!

I thought it was impossible to change the registration number in Ireland.

You can switch to ZV when the car is 30 years old. That owner may have gone for the 32 D reg in the hopes that the ZV series is revised at some point.
