I usually get my tyres from the lad in town, and I'll probably end up there again. But, money is really tight for me right now. Where would you say (online I suppose?) can I get the best price for tyres?
    Bog standard VW Passat BTW.

Bog standard maybe but there are what many would call bog standard passats out there with an array of different tyre sizes. You will see the tyre size on the sidewall of the tyre. It might be something like 195/65 R15 for example. That'll be a starting point.

You could buy online from the likes of these guys: -

They are often mentioned and recommended on this forum I notice. However, I've personally found it worked out at the same price or even marginally cheaper for me to buy and get them fitted by a local tyre fitter. That is perhaps because my tyre size is a really really common and popular size and I've only ever gone for mid range tyres. I'm sure if you were looking for a slightly more peculiar size or a more premium brand you might do better to buy online. However, I would recommed you ring a few local tyre fitters first quoting your tyre size and what exactly you want from your tyres.

Remember too to factor in maybe at least €10 per tyre/ perhaps about €15 each to get em fitted. Bear in mind too that not every tyre fitter will be happy to fit tyres for you which you bought online. In fact I've read on here that some will pretty much curse you out the door:eek:

Hope I've being of some help:)
