I am trying to copy (backp) the files on my HD in the Humax and am encoutering major problems.

    1. I cannot format a disk in ext3 format on my Windows XP based computer. I have tried various programs and none give a format acceptable to the Humax.

    2. I have managed to get a FAT32 format but I cannot get the Humax to copy anything. The COPY button is greyed out.

    I know nothing about Linnux.

    Anyone got any helpful suggestions?

Yes, download Parted Magic (a linux utility os) burn it to a cd rom and boot your computer from that, When it loads up the disk will eject.
Start the partition manager from it's desktop icon/shortcut (GParted) and that will allow you to re-format any HDD or partition to practically any format. It's fairly easy. It just gives you a graphical view of your HDD, very intuitive and easy to understand.
Linux is nothing to be afraid of and this program is all gui driven so as not to scare Windoze users

Be careful Linux can be addictive. I switched from Windows last summer, knowing nothing and found it to be very simple, now I wouldn't dream of using Windows unless forced to.
Linux teaches you how to use a computer with much greater confidence very quickly, and it's free (unlike anything MS/Mac)

When you run file manager and you have a usb stick in the Humax, you get the left panel for the Humax and the right panel for the USB.

This is where it gets bizarre.

You must move into the USB panel and click on whatever folder is there even though there are no files.

Then move back to the Humax side and now the copy button will turn green.

Play with it and you will get the idea.

Just as a matter of interest, current LG tv's will play SD files from the Humax from a USB stick. HD files recorded in Freesat mode won't play.

By the way, your Foxsat HDR is a linux based machine.

I tried this but could not work it out.

I solved the disk copy/format problem. I bought a disk caddy and installed the old drive into it and connected it by USB. This allows me to see and play the files on it. I have yet to work out how to copy the files over but it is a live system [SWMBO is watching stuff].

So I bought myself a disk caddy and mounted the old drive into it and could access all the old files. Success.

I then tried copying the files across with limited success. Yes it copied, but it took ages and ages. I could only get one file to copy at a time and it took ages and ages. So no to that.

Next step will be to set up a Linux workstation. I think I will have to connect the HUMAX to the network and copy the files over the network. I will need help with that but I'm not rushing.

Meanwhile I will have the USB disk attached when we want to watch the old files.

The Humax Foxsat HDR needs more horsepower in the processor. The new one does have that.

But it's nowhere near as flexible as the Foxsat HDR.
