Got quoted 400 from Advanced Pitstop tralee on a mk4 00 golf. He never mentioned anything about two timing belts? Give them a call, they tend to have set prices and I was happy with them. You can check the price on their website too.

Jesus dont don't go near those half wits, plenty of good indy mechanics around.

Actually call to that Dalton dude in portlaoise he seems very good from his posts here.

And make sure it's a genuine VW timing belt and kit that is used. These cars have a tendancy to break the belt or belts prematurely and this usually only happens with non genuine aftermarket belts and kits in my experience.

+1, under no circumstances should you use Advance Pitstop OP.

    Is it a 1.4 16v?

If so then you would be looking at a price in the region of €320 for the full kit and water pump in a good independent garage.

I understand your sentiments but it would be nice with added information besides "don't use them". Any mentioned experience you've personally had with them would add to the credibility of your post.

OP, if you can, use an indy and not a chain franchise. Keep your monies local.

Sorry about that horse but I dont know where to start! I know there is a lot of threads on the Interweb about them. I know a woman who left them service her car and they phoned her to inform her that her timing belt was over due replacement! Luckily she phoned the main VW dealer who informed her that the car had a chain!!!. They are great for tyres but thats it, anyway that George Dalton has replied and knows his stuff, he gave me good advice a while back. :)

For timing belts generally it's 350-450 incl labour.
A kit itself is usually about 200.

^^ subject to brand of kit and brand of car.

An indy is always the way to go over a dealer in my personal opinion, unless you have some type of special fancy car ;)

Not to defend AP in any way but that's actually one of the more common conundrums of car mechanics and often same brand will have chains for petrol cars and belts for diesel cars.
Like SAAB, the petrol models are chain. The 2.2 diesel is chain. The 1.9 diesel is belt...
AP tried a fast one there though, they're always trying to push extra crap on people. But I've never known them (the ones I've come across) to break a car.

Its not really a conundrum, even if a mechanic doesn't know off the top of their head if an engine is a belt or chain, all he has to do is look at the engine and they will know.

Once went to Advance Pitstop in Midleton, with a noise from my car at 80km and over. They didn't even test drive the car, just put in on the lift and advised me it was the centre exhaust box.

Went my local indie and he said it was a wheel bearing. Changed said wheel bearing and noise was gone. He said exhaust was perfect.

AP are either incompetent or cowboys. I wouldn't leave them near a push bike tbh.

Oh, sorry. I was just happy to come away with new break pads and a service for 140. Maybe they didnt even service the car and I just paid 140 for break pads...

thanks guys, i rang daltons garage portlaoise, got quoted €320 for parts and labour (official vw parts) and water pump, pretty happy with that, was expecting it to be more to be honest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Sounds like a great deal indeed.

€320 is as good a deal as you'll find from a competent garage using quality parts IMO.

We'll have to restructure or pricing...we normally charge €325:p
