Best bjj players

who would be the best Bjj practitioners in ireland today?
I mean right now, today, on the mats who would win most times in Ibjjf rules.

The top two are obvious. (Darragh and Chris)
Who would make up the rest of the top 10.
We had Grapplepalooza but not all the best players were able to compete. Injuries, work etc
I know it's not straight forward ie weight difference, coaching/work/family getting in way of full time training etc but lets try not to complicate answers as much as possible.

This is not meant in anyway to put anyone down or get in a bragging match. Just interested in like minded peoples opinions. Anybody worth a mention past or present deserves respect.

Chris bowe and Darragh O conaill are the two best guys in my opinion. They have brought home the most medals from major tournaments and after rolling with them millions of times i have no doubt. Not far behind them would be Arek and Tom king from sbg who have have both brought home medals from the gi and no gi europeans this year.

Guys like Joey breslin, John sheirdan, james gallagher have also been collecting alot of medals abroad. There are also lots of other great guys who aren't active competitors.

Key word is Competitors. Look at who brings home the medals internationally

    Darragh O'Connell
    Chris Bowe
    Tom King
    Joey Breslin
    James Gallagher
    John Sheridan

    Honourable Mentions

    Richie Crossdale
    Brendan McGarry
    Piotr (From Cork)
Richie Ivory (Not sure how often he competes in the gi though)

Gera nabuco Defo deserves a mention. He beat darragh at the Irish open. I know he's heavier then darragh but he still is up there with the best.

Well yes there are SOME blue and purple belts that can match up quite well with SOME black belts.

That would be an ecumenical matter. No one cares, except a few white belts and people who don't train.

    +1

Joey subbed a black belt in tournament when he was a blue belt / brand new purple. Think it was blue though.

But these guys I know don't like stuff like this, they train to improve themselves, Tom is right.

Everybody cares who's the best in every sport. It's just the new cool thing in bjj to pretend you don't.
Training to get better is the most important thing, but while doing that, why not care whose the best? Why not give recognition to those who are working hard everyday to become the best.

You're right, that's what I'm looking for but looking at where/how/how many medals won is a pretty good way to find the best.
There is something extra special about putting yourself on the chopping block for everyone to see if you fail and then coming out with a medal.
No losers at competitions. Just people who didn't win this time around.

And I know there are a few blue belts who can beat our black belts.

I get the feeling that what you know about Jiu-Jitsu could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

I know what you know about jiu jitsu would need a a pretty big book to be written on.
Sometimes you make statements on boards but don't explain.
Could you let us know where you feel darced has gone wrong?

If they dont compete NOW, we probably cannot say whether or not they are the best. If by best we mean whos able to beat who and not what belt they are or how much knowledge they have.

Darragh and Chris are the best at the moment in my opinion, John Sheridan is the only other compeitor regularly medalling at the big international competitions. John also qualified for the world jiu jitsu cup in Abu Dhabi this year and will be representing Ireland, as will Chris Bowe who qualified at the London trials.

As he who must not be named says, "its all about results".

If they roll against each other you can. One of the best players I know has never competed. He's without a doubt in the top 10 of who can beat who in Ireland, he'll roll with anyone so this is easily proven.

Disappointed more people didn't offer opinions on their top 10 bjj players.
    Thanks to those who did.
Hopefully there will be some good opportunities to see the good and great of irish bjj in action soon.

People care about who's the best in the WORLD, not so much Ireland :)

There is actually more to bjj than getting medals in comps , competitions just one aspect of the art . Take a look at chris fields as an example , His style of working to dominant position and finishing guys like pavel kusch is every bit a display of high level effective bjj as the lads who have won medals at the big comps

I'm talking about bjj , I think that means more than ibjjf , I think some of the best displays of bjj Irish people have shown have been in mma as well as ibjjf (or other grappling comp) rulesets
As for who's the best , well I know whos bjj I enjoy , John Sheridan , paddy houlihan , darragh o conaill , chris fields and Michael devlin would be my own favourites

TBH I enjoy so many of the grappler's in Ireland and certainly couldn't give you ten names, more like 50! We have so many skilled guys across the country in all grappling styles who are improving day by day!

Most people just care about having fun and getting fit, not the top ten!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭Richy06

Naming names and putting this guy over that guy would soon turn into a pissing contest and might even put afew noses out of joint. We all support one another on this small island so some don't feel confortable naming names, it is what it is. You certainly can't force someone to do it or dress them down for not doing so.

It'd also end up with this team saying all their guys are best and so on so forth.

In all the clubs around the country, there are killers. Some clubs have secret killers who don't compete, then there's those we know of. Just support everyone rather than worry about things like that.

Some of the best guys I know don't compete at all or just don't compete in BJJ. Paddy Holohan would give most of the tops guys I know fits but you won't see him in an IBJJF style comp soon.

I'd be interested to hear who the OP (Stillweak) thinks are the best guys in the country and why? Or maybe, just maybe this thread has another purpose (like his BJJ Foxrock thread). Anyway, stillweak, tell us who you think are the bestest and baddest of the Irish BJJ fraternity.

Oh is it the same guy? Weak sauce.
