P/S/F Outer CV Boot torn

Had our first generation (2005) Skoda Superb 1.9 diesel in for a service yesterday.

A couple of minor things brought up but one notable thing.

The garage says the outer CV gaiter rubber is torn and needs to be replaced. The cost for parts and labour is €170.

Now, first of all - is that a reasonable price?

Secondly, I'm reading allot online saying that if the rubber is torn then the CV joint is likely contaminated with sand and grit and will need replacing.

    Any advice on this?

    Cheers,
    Quad

If they are just replacing the rubber boot, then yes, it's a bit on the steep side.

    To give you an idea of the cost of the part;

But maybe some wires got crossed between ye and they were actually quoting to replace the whole CV joint?

No, he said the CV joint would have to be replaced if the rubber boot wasn't fixed. And the quote is pretty clear: 'Replace Outer CV Gaiter Rubbers - Standard - One Side:
    Labour: €126
    Parts: €43

I called two other places but both want to see it before they'll quote. Which I'm gonna do if they're totally taking the piss (it's a main dealer - I know!)

That is a crazy price. You would be looking at up to €100 to have a genuine part supplied and fitted by an independent.

You can also save a further few quid (€15 or so) by going for the OEM GKN boot as supplied by GSF.

There are also really cheap boots available but the quality is poor so using them is a false economy as they won't last.

€170 just for boot is ridiculous. You should be getting a joint and boot for that money!

Thought it was taking the piss alright. Makes me wonder about what other padding Pilsen have been doing (between timing belt, pump and a few other things I've spent nigh on €1200 in the last two years with em).
