Turbo trainer damaging tire

I just bought a second hand TRAX turbo trainer for indoor bike exercise. However, after just over a week of using it the tire was damaged with the rubber starting to come away. The guy that sold it to me said this is normal and I should use cheap tires. Is this correct or has he sold me a defective turbo trainer?

Think you should be using a specific turbo trainer tyre

I'd also think that a turbo-trainer specific tire would make more sense than just using any cheap one. They aren't too expensive either and will last longest.

Turbos will wear away tyres far quicker than normal road use would and yes, people generally use a cheap tyre for turbo use. Does the roller that interfaces with the tyre with look damaged e.g. uneven/shredded? If not the wear is normal.

Don't forget that you will need a wheel, tube and cassette for this new turbo tyre.

I don't bother with turbo tyres. I put old clapped out road tyres on my turbo wheel and ride them till they fall apart.
