Graduating soon - three questions

    Hi,

I'm going to be graduating from a masters (conversion) in computer science at the end of this year and was wondering of anyone could help me with these three questions:

When should I start looking for jobs, before or after finishing my course? I sort of want to leave it until I'm finished because I'm kept very busy in the course.

What sort of salary should I be looking for? I have absolutely no experience but I have done very well academically, with a first-class honours in Multimedia, and so far in my MSc I'm getting an A or B.

Finally some graduate jobs I have looked at ask for honours maths and 450+ points in the Leaving Cert. I didn't do honours maths and got 400 points. Should I still apply to these jobs?

I'm looking for a software development job. Maybe with Java or C++ but I'm not 100% sure yet.

Thanks to anyone willing to answer these questions for me!

You would need to have started last November really. There are still a few open to the end of the month if I remember correctly. I think Vodafone have a late date.

I presume you have to do a dissertation of some description ?

If so here is what the really smart graduates do. Use your dissertation as an opportunity to meet people in industry. Find out what the issues are that people in industry face and base your dissertation on studying them and providing a solution. Contact 5 companies and ask them what problem do they need looked at- try to find something common to all 5 companies. Then you'll need to liaise with 5 different people in 5 different companies, that could be by interviewing them or by them providing you with data or a coding problem or whatever. If you are going to solve a problem for them then each of the five people will be interested in the results of your disseration and will want a copy of it. Over the course of a number of months you will have gotten to know these people and will have more than a good opportunity to impress them.

If you do this the right way at the end of it all you won't have to even do a job interview- you'll have already proven yourself to them.

Best of luck with it whatever you do.
