I know there is a decent back log to receive new licence applications but just wondering how long people have been waiting to receive the receipt of Applictaion - meaning you can dribing within the state without the actual licence.

I was previously talking to the tax office who confirmed they received my application on 19th Feb but still havent received any confirmation in the post.

Surely I should have received something by now?

Thanks AB - I haven't even received proof of application yet even though they received the application on 19th - surely an automated system should have generated something by now.

I went in to renew my learner permit three weeks ago and had it Wednesday this week, that was Clare though. Got a receipt in there to say I had applied and it was ok to drive. Really pleased with it, was expecting a much longer wait.

Aparently you only get a receipt of application if you hand in the application in person - had I known this that is exactly what I would have done.

Having to wait weeks is annoying but more so is the fact that in this country having these flawed processes in place is still acceptable.
I really wish this country would make an effort to try and catch up with our neighbours in terms of tecnhology, processes, ability to actually function in a timely manner.

It really p1sses me off to see incompetence in action. Nobody talks to each other. Nobody knows what they're doing. In my original thread, someone even had their insurance cancelled as they were unable to produce their licence having sent for a new one. I would have complained and made a fuss. Why the insurance didn't have the nous to check the poster did indeed have a licence with Shannon is beyond me.

I myself had to kick up holy hell to get a disk for the same reason. We got the disc in the end, but to get anything done, you have to kick up a stink.

I renewed my UK licence and passport before I moved here. Guess what? I got back both within a week.

AB - I have just come back from a 3 year stint in the UK and have to agree - the way things are handled there is so much better.
Even if there is a delay there is complete tranparency so you know where you stand at each stage. Having a delay is one thing, its the not knowing that is frustraiting.

I have been emailing the tax office (motortax@dublincity.ie)
The guy there was able to pull my application and is in the process of sending out a receipt of application - which is something at least.

Now teh fun begins - this is my first licence so trying to get insurance without an actual licence will no doubt be interesting / impossible.

is that not what the whole thing of issuing card licences in the first place is all about

It is. But you miss the point. The bedding-in of the new system has been handled appallingly. The money's taken and seemingly disappears into a black hole before the licences are issued.

The incompetence is staggering. The licensing system is made a lot more difficult than it needs to be. There is no consistency in the length of time taken to issue. Nobody knows the action to take whilst waiting. Insurance companies might decide to cancel insurance because they are either too lazy or too stupid to make a simple phone call to check.

The Government needs to make the Driver Licence database (or whatever it is they have here) available to insurance companies so that they can check the driver's credentials. That is what happens in the UK when you take out insurance or go to hire a car. With a much smaller population, you might be tempted to think something similar could be done here. But no. This is Ireland after all. Tell the people any old crap, take your time doing it, and penalise heavily if one is unable to comply through no fault of their own.

    That attitude stinks.

    It's simple.
You send application off in post or in person at your local tax office.
You get an application number - each form can have a bar code that is scanned and recorded
you register online using application number - this links up to your application process.
At any time you can see where you are in the system, details being entered etc - on the off chance a mistake has been made or you need to provide additional documentation etc

Just like tracking a package - we all know getting something from the states can take a while but when you can log into DHL and see some movement it gives that level of reasurance.

Sending off applications of any importance and just having to wait simply isn't good enough
