    Just a quick question here,
as I was dropping my young lad to school this morning, I was stopped at traffic lights and a woman hit into the back of me. not too much damage to my car or hers from what I could see.

I got her phone number and insurance info (insurance disc was dated 12/12) but never rang the guards.

My question is, is it too late to inform the guards of the accident??
I'd be reporting it a day after the accident.

I dont car about damage to my car and definitely dont car about damage to her car but i am a bit worried because my 5 year old son was in the car.

btw, i quizzed her about her insurance disc being 3 months out and she said she has a new one at home.

Even if you've no intention of making a claim, I would still report the incident to both the guards and your insurance company.

It will cover you in case the other driver tries to blame you.

Don't worry about the fact that your reporting it a day or two late, it's irrelevant.

I'd say call into the station ASAP.

I had a minor accident in Sept last year. (no injuries, damage to both, other guy admitted fault)

I called the guards on the side of the road, the number just rang out.
In the end I called 999 and they said they'd get over as soon as they could. After 20 mins both partys just went home. Finally at 2am I got through to the station and I tried to give the details, the guard was really irate and said there was no point as they were not present at the scene. he wouldn't take any details.

I called up to the station the next morning and they took basic details but said that is the extent of what they will be doing.

I was told I should have called back 999 at the side of the road until someone attended the crash.

Unless someone is injured or an offence has been committed then the guards don't actually have to be called. Once you have the reg details and the insurance, you're generally fine. Seeing as the disc displayed was out, I'd call the guards to be on the safe side. Who gets a car insured and leaves the disc at home? There's a chance she may not actually be insured.

Another thing to be careful about is whilst you may not notice any damage on the bumper, it can be hard to determine any damage done behind it. Best to get it checked out by a decent mechanic if you can. Have you a tow bar by any chance?

Also I'd notify your own insurance company at the least even if you decide not to inform the guards. Just cover yourself basically.

An incident happened me in December where a woman hit my wing mirror and caused substantial damage, she kept on driving, i turned and followed her, she starting acting dumb like what was the problem when i finally caught up with her. I got her reg and reported her to the guards.
They said i did the right thing in reporting it even though she was not accepting liability, they said though i should have remained at the scene and rang them. I explained well if i did that i wouldnt have a reg number as she fled the scene. Anyway they rang her and she had to report to station to produce license, i ended up having to fix wing mirror myself and my insurance company are following her insurance company for the damage but no witnesses means i more than likely will not win this case but im glad I reported her - always report an accident.
