    I was told by a friend that if a parent hasnt had contact with a child for 5 years or over they have in the eyes of the law have NO rights to the child. Is this true?

    No, that's not true. AFAIK there's no law like that anywhere in the world. You can terminate parental rights if you give the child up for adoption, but not if you simply have no contact.

    I knew it didnt sound right.....

    If the persons name isnt on the birth cert then they have no rights??

    IANAL, but using personal experience, that's not necessarily true either. The father can go to court to have himself declared the father either with the mother's consent or by a court-ordered DNA test.
