One officer said that, in his 40 years in the force, the defendant was the most arrogant man he had ever met.

    What a complement to get.:pac:

    no i disagree.
there's little point in going down that route.
fair play to the Gardaí for charging this criminal.

that said i was disappointed he only got a suspended sentence.

Just so the blueshirts don't feel left out =p

A Cork county councillor who was allegedly driving while drunk fled from a Garda checkpoint, a court heard yesterday.

Veteran Fine Gael councillor Michael Hegarty (51), from Moanroe, Lady’s Bridge, Co Cork, was before Youghal District Court. He was charged with drink driving on August 21st, 2012.

Garda Cillian Barry gave evidence before Judge Terence Finn that he and his colleague Garda Shay Lyons were conducting a checkpoint at Ballymacoda, Co Cork, shortly after midnight.

He said he saw a car approaching the checkpoint and stopping a short distance away at a junction.

It turned “suddenly” to the left with a screech of wheels. The gardaí gave chase in their patrol car and saw it turning into an area known as Ballydaniel and then turn into the car park of a church.

    From the Independent article:

Judge Olann Kelleher described the night in question as fraught for everyone involved. The message had to go out that people who carry knives can expect a prison sentence, he said.
    So far so good.

However, he accepted Mr O'Flynn was of previous good character, had no previous convictions and has shown remorse. He sentenced him to six months in prison for possessing a knife, suspending it for a period of two years on good behaviour.
Okay, so all you said before was horse****?

When O'Flynn was asked about a pen knife found in a pocket after his arrest, he said it was for his own protection and he would use it again, the court was told.
Sounds like he wasn't just in possession of the knife.

aye depressing, but not altogether surprising. we as an electorate have a masochistic streak it seems
like an abused wife we welcome with open arms our tormentor, wanting to believe he's reformed and wont do it again.:D

the sad thing is that Fianna Fail are currently topping the polls - either the Irish have very short term memories or we get the politicians we deserve

On the plus side, he'll still be having porridge in the morning as bail was refused on the conspiracy charges.

Anyone hear how he got on with his application for legal aid also due to be heard today?

Sure the Sindo is even worse, in the article quoted in the opening post, the misspell the surname that owns the nightclub Gorbys. They spell it Carney instead of Kearney. Spelling someones name incorrectly is so fecking annoying, check it before printing.
