Hi, I'm thinking of buying a new motor and after going through Donedeal etc I'm down to two cars...

    BMW 520D E60 (2005/2006) or an Audi A6 2.0 TDI (2006/2007)

I've heard of a few problems with the 520D, swirl flaps etc

and I think the 2.0 TDI engine in the Audi may be troublesome....

any tips & advice would be appreciated :)

I would buy the one will the fullest service history and the best spec. All things being equal the E60 is the better car in most independent reviews but both are good despite a few issues.

    Would you consider a 525D or 530D?
Much better than a 520 imo.

you can get these blanked for very cheap...

I dont really see the point in these if cost is a concern which it obviously is with a diesel. The tax on the 530's is outrageous. Also the straight 6 while a nicer engine, will be heavier and definetly more thirsty.

Both cars can have problems, 520d have issues with swirl flaps and turbo failure but both can be prevented cheaply these days. The A6 can also suffer from issues such as troublesome injectors (which maybe replaced under a VAG recall) and also oil pump balance shaft failure. Again I think this can be fixed or replaced these days.

So imo it really boils down to which you prefer and what you want from a car. The BMW would be more a driver's car whereas the A6 would have a less driver focused feel to it. The A6 would have a little more room in it too.

    go for the 520 dude...
I tried both 2010 (models) when getting my most recent car in sept last year...Audi felt soul-less and I went with the 520d...was trading up from an A4..Audi were very uninterested in doing a deal...BMW very fleixible and willing to compromise..also better on servicing..
Both should be very goods on diesel..i could easily get 800 miles from a tank doing mixed motorway/city driving

I wouldn't consider the Audi unless it's Quattro, and probably Avant too. ;)

What are you replacing it with?

At this moment in time, I'm not sure. Haven't even advertised the car yet. Just through word of mouth but will put together a donedeal add the weekend.

I may have a van option but it may not be financially worth it, so may go down the cheap and cheerful route for a few months again.

All depends on driving style i guess Blingrhino
    I don't drive with a heavy foot :D
If you can only get 650 your doing it wrong!!!

I wouldn't comment on the reliability of either as I have owned neither long term, however having driven both the BMW is head and shoulders a better car.
If it were an S-Line Avant I probably would prefer to be looking out the window at the Audi in my drive - but otherwise still the BMW although imo its ageing badly.
