Can someone give me the 10 second overview on what the difference between the two is?

Open Office was run by SUN but when Oracle bought SUN there was a lot of anxiety and then Oracle did nothing - good or bad. SO a group forked it to create Libre Office to apply patches and stop the project dying.

Then after that project had some traction Oracle handed the OpenOffice project to Apache.

I think most people believe the LibreOffice is more active and has had more patches and functionality applied.

As it stands its probably a choice between licenses ... Open Office with Apache & Libre Office with LGPL.

In summary if something doesn't work in OpenOffice it *may work in LibreOffice.

    Rarely the other way around

Libre is less bloated and Sun decided to add Java to Open Office which means it's no longer true open source.

The Java installer is long gone from OpenOffice. However, both Libre and OpenOffice are reliant on JRE for full functionality although The Document Foundation has reduced the Java dependency significantly.
