I plan to build a log splitter this summer which wil be driven from the hydraulics of a tractor. Could someone recommend to me where the best place around limerick would be to lay my hands on the bits and pieces i need? (new or second hand) Looking for around a 16 ton ram, Single valve chest and getting long hoses made up. Also any suggestions on how i could make the ram Auto return would be much apprieciated!

Auto return could be double acting with small spring on spool lever, when you let it goes the handle flies back in reverse and reverses the ram.. Weld a noggin onto the ram so that when its fully back it knocks the lever back to neutral..

From using a lot of them I dont know if auto return made such a difference, as it always returns the ram to the same full open position, which is killer depending on the lenght of logs. You can be as quick eyeing up the next log and and knowing instinctively how far to return to

Now what was great on a splitter was auto return with variable depth..

Basic mechanism was as described but the noggin part was adjustable so that the the lever got knocked back to neutral at different heights. That allowed quick adjustment from chopping small logs to chopping large logs... Without that feature, auto return is not as valuable as you think as it returns the splitter to the widest open every time.

Please consider some sort of safety feature, to keep your hands away from the log under pressure. E.g two spool levers one for each hand... Maybe build them down low behind a laterally adjustable grabber so that you can centre the log with two shields as well as pressing down to send in the oil..

Biggest problem with the home made ones is that they are overly hardened but yet suffer from torsion or bending of pins after a few days splitting.. Some of them require an expert to operate, between attaching to tractor, moving etc, whereas the commercial ones while expensive with all the features can be operated by gran.

That said I do love the smell of welding rods in the morning!!

Get back to me and I dig out a tube video of this.
