What to do with BVD positives

Uncle got his 1st batch of calves tested last week, came back with a positive. Still waiting for the confirmation of what it was PI or TI. Calf was running around happy out the other day. I know some lads on here talk about the shotgun but the idea of shooting one of your own after rearing it seems very odd to me, uncle would be even more fond of the animals.

If its not wasting away I'd say it should be ok to stick calf and mammy into a field on their own.

What's the deal with keeping the calves and butchering them in the autumn assuming its still alive by then?

you have to retest it and the dam by blooding them... isolate them... you can hold on to the animal if you want but i would have it gone as soon as the second positive result comes back.... as i said before we had to get rid of a pb aa bull calf last year as healthy as anything but bvd positive- total sickner, but we are all in the scheme to eradicate the disease not prolong it

Was chatting to the uncle earlier, he got a voice mail from someone in Bvd group about his options, reckons he'll wait till the second test comes through. No point jumping the gun.

Touch wood it won't happen, but If it does fail and fail retest the only thing for it IMO is the bullet.
    Better that than spreading it.

    Considering your OP that's a bit inappropriate isn't it:D.

I was wondering how long it was going to take before someone spotted that.

Going to take while to fatten the mothers before they go to the factory, anyone have much trouble with drying them off, we would normally buy a calf for a cow if she loses a calf early in the year.
