My buddy has a 2008 diesel mondeo..hes back from holidays (car hasnt been started in over 3 weeks) and the key itself wont open the door and the alarm keyfob does nothing when the unlock button is pressed.

We replaced the battery in the keyfob but no difference. Looks like the car battery is dead..but how can he replace it when the car refuses to unlock?

Inside the car we can see a red flashing 'i' light on the dash. Not sure what exactly it means as his manual is in the car.

    Any ideas? Thanks

Opening normally with key should open just the door you put the key itself in. flashing light is the immobilizer

Does the mondeo have key holes in both front doors?

can you see the bonnet mechanism thru the front grill?
you could try and get at the cable for the bonnet lever then

Key should open drivers door even with dead battery.

Here is something you can try with a battery charger or portable boost starter, positive on starter motor large red cable, negative to engine block.

    Then retry your key fob

If it wasn't used even once since 2008, it just might be seized

    no.

There may be a hidden keyhole for the boot though,OP...have a look up and sideways aprticularly around the number plate light/boothandhold areas.

I hesitate to suggest it on a modern car but if you can get access this way you may be able to power the electrics via a booster set and a bulb holder....
