If I was going to spend €1000ish on a bike in the morning, I'd get this one

I'd buy 2nd hand personally, but yeah if I was going to spend a grand on a new bike that'd be it.

You would probably get this for around that price, and it would be a bargain. Have one myself, would recommend.

Is it 6 years old? Looked like the 2010 model to me. I certainly wouldn't be offering over the op's budget for it.

The bike itself looks nice. It's just those flight deck shifters look older though. Not sure when 105 switched to under bar tape routing but it's a while ago now.

If it's your main bike and you can afford it, then do. If I was buying it, it would be as my winter bike so 105. But if it was my only bike, I'd put ultegra on it.

    Why?

Would an average buyer looking to spend €1k on a bike notice the difference?

Hi i am looking at buying my first road bike. I only have max 350e to spend. What do you think of this? http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/bicycles/4503382

They might notice the stickers say Ultegra as opposed to 105, other wise I seriously doubt it.

I would be against the Canyon as a first bike, yes it is tremendous value for money but its not very versatile. It doesn't have mudguard/rack eyelets and can probably only accommodate a 25mm tyre max.

If you are limited in budget to €1000, i think you are better of getting a versatile bike you can kit out as a proper winter trainer/ Commuter. Rather than trying to eek out every little performance advantage. Your cycling will benefit way more from doing more miles than from the slight aero advantages of close tolerances and slightly lighter gears.

So with that in mind I would go for something like....

    Kinesis T2,
    http://www.fatbirds.co.uk/573235/products/kinesis-racelight-t2-v2-road-audax--sportive-bike-black-2013.aspx

Genisis Equilibrium 00 (it doesn't have upper rack mounts but there are ways around that.)

    Kona Honky Tonk.

    Pinnacle Dolomite.

    Tifosi CK7
    http://www.wiggle.com/tifosi-ck7-audax-veloce-2013/

Giant Defy would be an option too.

If you already have a hyrbid or some sort of all weather bike then ignore me and the Canyon would be a very attractive option. And please nobody give me guff about race blades or Crud whatevers. They are rubbish.

If it's within budget why wouldn't you get the best components available?

105 is perfectly fine, but if you can get a bike with Ultegra for the same price or within your budget, why wouldn't you?

There is a €300 difference between the 105/Ultegra for the canyon. Just wondering is it worth the difference.

I was discussing this with a lad on the cycle last weekend. He went from 105 to Ultegra and didnt think it was worth it as an upgrade

For example is this Corratec Nutrixion Corones 2012 worth it given it has a full Ultegra set up?

I cant find what the fork is made up but otherwise it seems comparably to the canyon Roadlite

OP's title does say "Road bike" in fairness.
And while crud racers are rubbish, sks race blades are brilliant.

I had 1000 euro bike purchase to make I wouldn't be looking beyond canyon either, personally.

The one's I listed are all road bikes leaning towards the audax end of things. They are just not race specific.

The new "Long" ones are, the older "short" ones are a bit meh...

or maybe a Ribble winter trainer with 105 for less than €1,000?

I wonder if you guys could help me with some advice.

I'm looking to buy a new bike under the cycle to work scheme, so have up to €1000 to spend.

I currently cycle a Specialised Rockhopper that is about 6 years old and enjoy cycling, but now I'm looking to perhaps move onto a road bike.

I don't really know too much about road bikes, being new to it and I would greatly appreciate any advice or pointers to great bikes that can be purchased under the cycle to work scheme.

Given that I'm new to this, I'm not sure if I should go for a pure racer or perhaps something that can be a bit more versatile, that can be used as a racer, but also as a commuting bike, etc.

Any advice and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

It appears I answered a question that wasn't really asked. No point in spending an extra 300 on Ultegra on a 1000 euro bike.

Subjective I suppose, but the new Ultegra is lovely. It should also out last 105 as it better made.
