Will my gum descend?

I went to the dentist today and had a gap slightly filled in between my front teeth. Seen as though the gap couldn't be filled in right up to the root, it has left a tiny triangular gap at the top by the gum. I mentioned this and the dentist said something about my gum descending but I foolishly didn't inquire further as my mouth was a bit sore and I was eager to get some air.

Does anyone know will my gum descend a bit to cover the small triangular gap, and if so how long would that take?

    Cheers!

Just to clarify, the triangular gap that I hope the gum will descend into is no more than 1mm long.
