Second Marriage

    Hi there,

Does anyone know how long you have to be divorced in Ireland before you can re-marry?

To clarify; my first marriage was in a catholic church. We did not seek an annulment as I am not a catholic anymore but we did obtain a legal divorce in 2010.

I have been lucky enough to find love a second time and we would like to get engaged but I seem to remember somebody mentioning, some time ago, that you had to wait a few years before you could re-marry in the eyes of the state?

I am fully aware that I cannot re-marry in the eyes of the catholic church unless I obtain an annulment which I am not interested in doing.

As far as I'm aware, as long as your Divorce Decree is both granted and perfected, then you can marry immediately after this. I am open to correction though.

Yep - this is all I could find. Produce your paperwork and off you go!

3.1 - Re-marriage of persons who have been previously married:

If either party has been married previously (i.e. is divorced or widowed), it is necessary for that party to produce either a Divorce Decree (Absolute) or a Death Certificate, as appropriate.
If either of the parties to a proposed marriage were previously married, or in a civil partnership this fact should be brought to the attention of the Registrar of Marriages at the time that the notification to marry is being given by the parties to the proposed marriage.
