    hi all,
thinking of buying a 12 reg Golf TDI which is now only having it first service at 39,000km... the car looks good but id be wary of that many miles and it only getting serviced now.
    thoughts would be great

Amazing that someone could afford to buy a brand new car and not service it.

The latest would have been 30k but if it was my car the first servive would have being done at 15k. I dont believe that this long life oil is as good as they claim.

    exactly what i was thinking...
chatting with a VW mechanic and he reckons 20k miles it should have been done at. so its a bit over alright.

That should be service every 15k km. we have an octavia which would has the 1.6tdi engine and we service it every 15k km. going over a few thousand km would be ok but 24k km.

12 Reg Golf TDI's are so commonplace these days that the above model would have to be sufficiently cheaper than another fully serviced 12 Reg Golf in order to make the risk worthwhile IMO.

I'd avoid and find another one tbh OP. 40k km is too long.

Would you not go a few thousand more and buy a brand new Golf Mk7? You'll get a good bit of your extra money back when you come to sell in a few years time...

i'd love to but we are talking a good few thousand more. might leave it for the moment and see about maybe buying new next year.
many thanks for the feedback everyone.
bit mad though that someone buys a new car and doesn't get it serviced until they trade it in again... id say it happens alot.

Leave it, if you needed warranty work I doubt VW would be interested.

I was looking at a 4 year old car with over 50k miles for sale in a main dealer recently. When I enquired about a service history, he said there was none but not to worry, "sure nobody keeps them" and anyway they would service it before they sold it to me. So looks like you have absolutely nothing to worry about OP ;)

That should have been serviced at 30,000km, as it's set to Long Life intervals coming out of the factory, and it comes with Long Life Oil.

Still 9k over service and you can kiss goodbye to manufacturer warranty or any goodwill if something does happen. It's probably OK (seen much worse), but I wouldn't take the chance - should be plenty of others around.

If the owner couldn't be bothered servicing it until 39000 k , especially the first service, God only knows what other ways he/she mistreated it. Was it revved hard from cold starts etc? I'd be giving it a miss anyway. Better safe than sorry:)

Walk away, why do you think they are selling a 1 year old car ?

    They know something is wrong

yeah Id walk away, what a bloody joke, especially on modern diesels.

I dont even believe this BS from the manufacturers, they say it so that looks a better proposition mainly for fleet cars. You may get away with it in short term, i.e if you dont plan on keeping car for more than 3-4 years, but the people further down the ownership chain will certainly pay for it.

Has it definitely not been service since new? or is it that there is no history of a service. Not that it makes much difference, but it was obviously doing a lot of miles and its just a bit unbelievable that it wasn't serviced.

Well, we run all VAG cars on those intervals and some have made it well past 200,000km, but I'm sure it's all just a marketing ploy............

Some people change their cars very frequently to avoid paying for any maintenance like servicing, tyres, NCT, etc. As daft as it sounds it's not as uncommon as you would think.

As said, there are plenty of 2012 Golf diesels out there for sale to be fussy about which one to buy. I would not fancy doing 40k km on the same oil.

I know it's not strictly relevant but if covering that distance in my car I would be servicing it for the 8th time in another 1000Km. I know that it's a different engine and different grade oil but you would still have to wonder it it's 8 times better (or 6 times better going by the manufactures recommendations).
I don't think I would ever buy any car that had gone that long without a service.

I know a respectable lady who buys a new car every 3 years. Car is never serviced or checked in the mean time. Low mileage and all that, but still...

I'd say it's very common here. People are set to spend many thousands on a car and then they don't want to spend a penny on the rest (tax, insurance, maintenance, even fuel)

€6,000 depreciation in the first year is fine, but €300 tax is way too much :D
