I've moved into a house that has a tretment system due to high iron in the water well. The landlord tells me that the treatment system is self sufficent and i don't neeed to add anything to it. There is a 25 l drum of some sort of chemical and also a tub of potassium on top of the system.

Anyway got up this morning and the water from the tap was purple, can't get the landlord on the phone.

Is this dangerous and what is causing it ??

you need to get someone to look at it, the treatment system needs a to be looked at, it may need a service or maintenance

The purple colour is Potassium Permanganate which is used to recharge the Iron filter. It will be on a timer and designed to come on in the early hours when no one is using the water. This will happen several times a month depending on the number of occupants/water usage. The recharge cycle takes about 90 minutes and is set on the control head on top of the tall cylinder.
If you run the water in the house it will effectively introduce the contaminated water into your storage tank which means the whole system will have Potassium Permanganate contamination. This chemical is a very reactive oxidant and therefore highly dangerous in it's powdered form.Diluted in water it will not be so dangerous (it is used as a disinfectant in Koi ponds as well as making illegal drugs) but Google it and then call your Landlord.
The timer clock will be on top of the tall cylinder. Check the time shown and adjust if required. The PP is put into the chamber which then gets diluted during backwashing and introduced into the filter bed and then the system is flushed with clean water to rinse the PP out. If the Landlord said it does not require maintenance then he is responsible for making sure it is actually maintained. Do not mess with the tank with the PP in it as it can cause serious damage to you.
