Im sure this probably varies from garage to garage and there is no real definite answer... but Im going to a garage today at lunchtime to have a look at a car Im particularly interested in.

Its 9K but Ive only got 8K (however its in cash). Do you think if I walk in and said I'll give him the cash there and then Id get it, or am I asking too much?

If worst comes to it I'll give a deposit and save for another month or two :(
But would be very nice if I could buy it this week and get out of this $hitty cycling everywhere situation :o:D

do you have a trade in or straight deal?
If no trade in I can see your arm being ripped off and me being me id start the bidding at 7k

    (however its in cash)
Cash may be a disadvantage. It will cost them to more lodge it. In my experience garages prefer cheque/bank draft.

Steady on man! I'm usually thinking of ways of getting out of having to drive and use the bike instead! :)

$64 question. What is the car worth, and how keenly is it priced?

Oh. Well a cheque can be arranged if thats what they'd prefer. However, I kinda thought cash on the spot would have more bargaining power than a cheque.

Hold your horses there dude and don't be panicing about the price until you have inspected the car.

What make model is the car?
Have you done any price comparisons on Carzone.
What asking prices are on the other cars.
Have you driven the car?Are there other similarly priced models available
Like our friend said start with an opening offer of €7000, see what happens.
Be prepared to walk away if you don't get the car for the price you are prepared to give, remember the the actual price is what a customer is willing to pay for the car.!
How long has the car been in stock? No garage can afford to keep a car on the forecourt for more than 1 month, otherwise it is going down in value every month!
    Happy hunting!:)

remember if you say I have 8 cash thats as low as you can go. The dealer will want to hit some middle ground so make sure you offer well below the max your willing to pay

Its all in order. 1 year full waranty with garage. 1 year AA. Their mechanics give it the thumbs up. My mechanic give it the thumbs up. Very complete service history. Passed motorcheck etc...

I just have to go test drive and see what I think.

Of course they give it the thumbs up.

A fair few places when I was looking at cars had there cash price up and some wouldn't budge.

It really depends how much you want the car and how much the dealer can afford to let it go for given what they paid for it. If they paid more than €8k for it then it is unlikely they will let it go for the same or less.

Just ask them for their best cash price that you are willing to buy today if the price is right for you and take it from there. Haggling is like a game of poker, remember most of these guys have been at this for years so are well versed on how the game plays. If the price isn't right for you then the biggest advantage is knowing your top price and when to walk away.

Don't look over interested in the car tell the dealer you are willing to buy today you have cash make your offer if he says no way he couldn't take that ensure he has your number and just walk out. Alot of the time if the offer is reasonable they will ring you back and take it. On the last car my parents bought they had a 1 year old trade in. The dealer wanted 5k along with there car for the new one. My parents said they had 1250 and simply walked out of the garage. The dealer rang back 2 hours latter and said he'd take the 1250 euro. They wouldn't of got that deal if they hadn't of left.

Windscreen price might well be the straight sale price, dealer might be quite happy to leave it sitting there until someone throws the asking his way.

If you've already had the car checked out you might not be in a great bargaining position either to be fair especially if the car is priced right :)

You should have a fair idea from what similar cars are priced at.

it depends on the car too. If its a car that is in demand and is not overpriced a low offer will get you nowhere. A respectable dealer will think you are a time waster and not bother with you.

Cash is really only useful as leverage for a better price if you're buying from someone who is half in and half out of the real economy i.e. if you pay him cash he doesn't have to put it through the books. In that case he's probably crooked anyway and you'd be better off not buying from him because his warranty is worthless.

A main dealer probably won't give you a better price for cash, in most cases they don't like sending staff to the banks to lodge a pile of cash (you or your accomplice could be around the corner waiting to ambush them) so they prefer drafts.

The other situations where cash can negotiate a better price is a trader who takes credit cards but most cars are priced outside the range of credit cards so it doesn't arise.

I'd assumed having and offering cash just meant no trade in. I've always asked for the best cash price with the intent of paying by draft and I don't buy cars that are that expensive.

The commission on CC's could wipe out a large part of the dealers profit. I know in some places I've been, not car dealer, they have a CC surcharge.
