Old Movies on New TVs Look Like Amateur Footage?!

I've noticed this on a few occasions when looking at old(ish) movie footage on brand new HD TVs - regularly they seem to look like they're shot on a camcorder?!

This would be on a feed from a HD set top box. Hard to put my finger on what exactly makes it look so amateurish, but it's more pronounced when the camera is moving and the subject also is - the footage looks too jumpy, and the movement of the camera is far too obvious - whereas when viewed on a non-HD TV feed it looks really slick. An example of a movie I've noticed this with is Goldeneye.

Anyone else noticed this, or know why it happens?

I'm thinking of buying a new HD TV soon but am reluctant to go for it on the back of this. Anyone know if new TVs have a setting that can be tweaked on them for watching older movies to avoid this problem?

    Cheers

It may be down to screen resolution, frame rate or aspect ratio.

Note that footage these these is better than old footage.

It might also be some of the TV's image processing tools, switching off various "enhancers" might help!

As Tea says, switch off any of the advanced picture settings e.g. on a Philips it's "HD Natural Motion", "MPEG Artifact Reduction" etc... it gives everything that weird Days Of Our Lives look.

Indeed, as said above, turn off "TruMotion" or whatever it's called on your TV to get rid of this hateful "Soap Opera" effect.

Oh and if you don't like that sort of image, don't go see The Hobbit in 48 FPS! Longest 3 hours of my life...
