Myself and a friend are thinking of going to South America for approx 3 months. Have been looking at some of the tours on tucantravel etc. Just wondering if anybody has been on any tours with these (or another company) and if you found them decent / value for money etc. Any help/advice appreciated

It depends on which countries you want to visit, but independent travel is quite easy in SA. It will always come out cheaper than a tour. There are lots and lots of travellers from all parts of the world moving around SA and it is very easy to link up with others along the way.

travel in SA is easy. We did a 3 month stint going ourselves. I would not recommend booking anything here....you will pay over the odds. Cruz del Sur are one of the main bus companys. there buses are incredible! Was getting wine on it!

I'm guessing that was Cruz del Sur in Perú? Because each country has its own bus companies and Cruz del Sur, southern cross, is a common name. In general, the buses in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and some routes in Perú are excellent. Buses in Ecuador and Colombia are generally fine. A lot of buses in Bolivia can be challenging, but a lot has to do with geography. On good paved highways you can have bigger and better buses. On narrow mountain roads the bus has to be smaller and the vehicles take more of a beating.

If you have 3 months, try to keep the trip to 3-4 countries at the most. Distances are huge.
