As long as the car isn't covered in muck you'll be grand. Then again, why not wash it? If you have to ask it probably needs it ;)
Pay extra attention to wheel arches as they'll want to inspect brake lines.

I think their info they provide when you book asks that the car is cleaned to enabled them to inspect it, so don't run the risk of them failing you over something so trivial.

As said, I think the underside being clean is more important than the paintwork!

No need to wash it unless it's extreamly dirty underneath and in the arches. Still i supppse a wash wouldn't do no harm before the nct either.

No need but as with other things in life perception is a major consideration. If a tester walks out to a car and its filthy is he not gonna think to themself that if they can't be bothered to have the car clean what else are they slack on also soil and cows crap falling on your there while testing a car isn't gonna put them in the best humour.

Not at all. If you have the car clean you'll give them less reason to piss you off.
Don't go looking for problems by turning up with a filthy car.
Testers are only people and if you make the effort they might just let you off with borderline stuff *guess*

we'll have to beg to differ on this, but you're talking horse manure....if the cars fundementals are in order as per the test, dirty or not, it'll pass.

My uncle put an RX8 through a few years ago and it was a spotless car, the tester failed him on something very minor and he politely asked could it be overlooked and he'd get it sorted, the testers reply was "Well you clearly look after it so just make sure to get it done soon" and gave him the pass.

So no, he's not talking Horse Manure

Obviously if the wheels were falling off it'd make no difference how clean the car was!

There was a thread here before where a car was particularly dirty and the testers refused to test it. If it looks like you are covering something up or they can't do a full inspection you're out of luck.

I thanked that before your ninja edit! Nah, it wasn't the Fonthill centre :D

And no again, it was passed because it was tidy and presented well!

I got let off with wheel alignment that was fractionaly out on my old leon because it was so clean. The tester told me about it after and said he ran it on to the machine 4 times until it came in under the limit. He said he wouldnt fail me because the rest of the car was spotless and that he knew I would get it sorted straight away..

Id say he had a little smile when I drove out of the center and into the tyre shop across the road!:o

I put my spotless RX8 through the test a few years ago, I mean you could have eaten your dinner off this car i kept it that clean .... Tester was a rude prick and failed me on 1 rear shock absorber even though the car had only 30k on it

but yeah I agree, a dirty car gives off the impression youre a bit of a slob really

I presume the rude prick failed the rear shock because it was bollixed.

Well the car had 30k miles on it and was only ever driven on a UK motorway prior to me importing it. It has just passed its MOT over there with no advisories.

I cant see how just 1 shock absorber on the rear could be "bollixed" a few weeks later when I brought it for its NCT.

To be fair though, he only started acting like a rude prick when questioned him on it and when I asked him if there's any chance he could test it again in a different lane.

I replaced the shock in the end anyway, The mechanic that replaced it for me thought I was mad replacing 1 perfectly good shock absorber!
