18k HotHatch Ideas?

So, I'm on the market for something new and just looking for some possible out of the box idea's that could be gotten for the money.

My requirements are something preferably 4 door, 2.0 (unless its a cheap tax diesel) and up in the years if possible, extra space and comfort to a degree is a +.

I've had my eye on 2008 FD2 Civic type R's, its one of the only Honda's I haven't owned, but the more I think about the price of them I'm just wondering if they are really worth it or within the same price range is there something I'm not looking at.

I mostly do city driving and not mega miles, but I don't want to be paying 1500 odd road tax a year and massive fuel or service costs either, which is why the Honda has also had a big appeal to me.

I've had some mates harping on about Vrs octavia's, but I've never driven one and Im unsure of how "hot" so to speak they are.

Anyways, any idea's or food for thought greatly appreciated!

Focus ST, for about half your budget and spend the rest on the tax and petrol. :D

Focus did indeed come as a 5dr hatch.

It doesnt have to be a 4 door hatch, saloon suits me fine too basically some extra available space if needs be.
I've driven OPC astras and I don't like them, and the thought of tax and running costs on the ST has me wary, I don't want to buy something that's going to be saleproof in a year or two either :)

If residuals worry you, buy a €7k car instead of an €18k car. Costs should be looked at relative to a 2.0 hot hatch btw if you;re considering the Focus ST.

It's a fast family car you want then? Not a hothatch.

Once a car is 4-5-6 years old residual loss has already been soaked up by the previous mug :p

How about a 130i from the UK? £11k (about €13k and €5k VRT)
Tax would be a bit harsh, but if you're not doing mega miles, the fuel performance woudn't be such a concern.

    Or wait a few years and get a 2008 M3 Saloon :)

Tbh there is very little to be gained getting going newer than 07-08 hot hatchwise unless going for a Focus RS/Golf R or 135i Mtech as all you are going is paying for a newer version of the same car.

Put the savings into tax and running costs...

Sorry, but if you want to "think out of the box", then the answer is a Giulietta Cloverleaf - never actually seen one in the flesh; The other options named in the thread are really "cookie-cutter" stuff...

    Cooper S? Jcw?
Er, space needed, maybe not - maybe clubman instead of cooper hatch?

Ah jesus, a hot hatch meant a 205GTI at one stage, now a 330 saloon is a rival to a hot hatch? Volvo T5 estate must be surely in the running at that rate

The op said he wouldn't mind a 4 door

Tax is only €750 on the 330 and €570 for 325

Sure you might as well push it a bit further and go for a 335i!

Seat Leon Cupra or the Sport :)

Megane r26 or 225 sport. Or if size isn't an issue Clio 197. Two of the best hot hatches IMO.

What did you not like about the OPC ?
What did you think of the power from them? If not happy, then you will not be happy with the power from the vRS unless you go down the modding road.

Tax might be a problem ;)

I'd say every hot hatch has nearly been covered. If the OP is discarding them all then he doesn't want a hot hatch..

I found the handling a bit pants if driven on, power delivery ect was good and certainly pokey, but handling wise I didn't think it felt responsive, In saying that it was awhile ago and I ended up buying the FN2 civic type R instead of an OPC at the time.

I like the look of Leon Cupra's and would like to get a drive of one, may pop down and see the one in ballymount on carzone to get an idea what there like.

Whats the story with the megane's as daily drivers? Any know issues? Like I said I'm used to Honda's and have been fairly close minded when it came to buying anything else in the past, but at the same time I've never gone wrong with one either so is it a case of better the Divil you know or step out of the comfort zone :)
